This was a very diverse group of riders with different abilities and skill. We wondered prior to the trip how all the guys and girl will get along.
The two brothers were mostly leading the pack and it was good to see the brotherly affection on display throughout the trip, even though they have very different personalities. Both are avid riders though, and it showed.

Ri unfortunately sprained her ankle on the third day, on our way to Van Zyl's Camp. Offering her very reliable and as Dwerg found out, very capable DR to Dwerg when his BMW decided to call it quits, was a very unselfish act that no one will forget in a hurry.

The three stooges - PK, Hennie and their mate Shane were all riding thumpers, a KLR, a DR and a XR650l. These three guys rode in a way that I would want to, when I get to their age. (Sorry Peter, I had to). They frequently stopped somewhere in a beautiful spot to sit down, relax and share a cup of tea, or a glass of red wine. Nothing hurried them - Ever.

Trevor and Hannes became good friends on the trip and for most of the time rode together. Both good riders and both blessed with mechanical aptitude.
Very different personalities but both true adventure riders in my opinion.

I decided to do this trip with two of my employees whom I have not spent enough time with recently.
Janco is my righthand and the Quest guys will know him well.
Steff runs my other business, and this was going to be his first time on a dual sport bike and his first time on gravel.

Hardy, Janco and Steff rode at the rear of the group, sweeping the route and making sure that no one was left behind or in need of help. Although I only got a high five from Steff as he passed me when I ran out of fuel on day 3..... :imaposer: :imaposer:

The group was spread out on most days, which meant that we only regrouped at the end of the day's ride or at specific pre arranged meeting spots.

Steff is still embarrassed about this incident. He honestly thought Canzius was high fiving him and reciprocated (with his throttle hand). He missed the high five by about a meter, took another 30 meters to regain control of the bike, and left Canzius without fuel for a while  :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer:

Looking at this photo, I realise that I completely forgot about Barry...... :-[
Barry is Gene De Kock's dad and joined us on certain parts of the route on his Suzuki DR650

We went to bed after a lovely supper and chatting around the fire. I was to get my first taste of sleeping out in the open in Namibia. I went to bed in a t-shirt and shorts. after the mosquitos had ravished me, it started getting cold....really cold. By the time we had to get up, I was dead tired and cold.

Luckily we were treated with a beautiful sunrise and soon all hardship during the night was forgotten. It was however very clear that it would be wise to choose your spot for setting up your stretcher very carefully for the duration of the trip as we had some VERY heavy breathers in the group.... :pot: :pot:

Only having done two rides for the year before this trip, I was so happy to be on a bike that I turned around from this spot and rode almost all the way back to the tar to see what was holding up the other riders, good excuse to do a few more kays to get used to my ‘new’ bike. One the return ride to Spitzkoppe, my bike gave a few splutters but I didn’t think too much of it

DAY 2 - SPITZKOPPE TO PALMWAG

Packing up camp on the first morning was a bit of a learning curve. Each morning got easier and by the end of the trip it was second nature.

Hennie and Shane enjoying breakfast

Even before the trip started, hardy was warning us that the first three days would be boring riding on open roads to the north where we would get to the good stuff. This being my first visit to Namibia in nearly 25 years, I thoroughly enjoyed every kilometre of every day. The beauty of this country, even on the "boring" days, was staggering. Dwerg and I started getting into a rhythm on day two we were having a lot of fun on the enduro bikes. We were comfortably cruising at around 100km/h and stopping to take photos of the landscape and wildlife.

Just before Uis, there was a dry riverbed that had our names on it. We had not really encountered sand up until that point and we both gave it a nod and played around a bit until the others caught up.

Next stop was going to be the Ugab River crossing for lunch next to the track.

My GPS was still disconnected and @Dwerg 's GPS was acting up. We were very unsure of where exactly we had to be, but eventually ended up in the right spot.

And then it started going wrong for @Dwerg ...... ??? His bike started backfiring, misfiring and losing power. We would stop every few km's, rest a while and then it would go like the clappers again, only to come to a halt a few kms down the road. It was painful to watch and I felt very sorry for my little brother....
