The 501 was running low on fuel again and this was the first proper tree we had seen in hours. We took refuge from the sun and started taking fuel from the DR to put in the 501. Trevor and Hannes also arrived.

The little bit of greenery around the rock with a bit of water and motion detection trap camera. There was also a little cave in the rocks closer to the tree where we parked. It took us a while to put 2 & 2 together............ I started getting nervous and it only got worse when Dwerg found that the other side of the tree where we parked was a scratching pole for a big cat and actually found a nail imbedded in the tree.

Noneking, julle was hier by 'n baie spesiale plek in Nam en moet baie geeerd voel.

Quate van my rr

"Gai Ais is a type of wetland called a palustrine system.  (Any inland wetland which lacks flowing water, contains ocean-derived salts in concentration of less than 0.05% and is non tidal)"

“Water by airmail
Because the sandgrouse are strong flyers and can rapidly cover great distances (up to 80 kilometers) to a water source, their reliance on drinking water does not normally present a problem.
When they are breeding, however, the situation becomes more complex, because the chicks also need to drink regularly during hot weather. The problem of the chicks’ dependence on water has been solved in an intriguing fashion. While at a waterhole, the male birds lower their bellies into the water. The belly feathers, by virtue of their unique structure, soak up water and retain it, much like a kitchen sponge. During the flight back to the nest, these feathers are held close to the skin to minimize evaporation. When the males arrive, the chicks strip the water from the belly feathers with their beaks. The water-carrying capacity of sandgrouse feathers varies between species, with those species inhabiting the driest habitats having the feathers best suited for water transport.”

By lunchtime I was pulling serious amps, losing concentration and riding slower and slower....... I was making silly mistakes. I was not drinking water as I should and probably dehidrated.

We stopped for a snack and a bit of a rest. When we got going, I felt rejuvenated and immediately the pace picked up.....

Ek en my vrou was amper dood hier.

Apparently this old stone dwelling/kraal has a telephone inside....... I wasn't going to look myself as I'd already decided that a big cat was stalking me from somewhere behind the rocks or trees. We made careful calculations about the petrol we could take from the DR as it would be touch and go to get both bikes to Abu Huab Camp at Twyfelfontein.

Hardy, Steff, Janco and the rest of the crew arrived after dark. I was dead tired that evening. I don't remeber much, just that we had lekker smoked ribs  ::). Had a shower, got in bed and slept like a baby. The next day was going to arguably be the best and most demanding ride of the trip and I could feel the excitement building ...

Great minds think alike.

Ek was moeftoe.

:peepwall:

My uitputting was maar die hitte en nie genoeg drink nie.
