@trevo with his trusty Dakkie

Not to hi jack the thread, I maintain my own motorcycles, my Dakar is 17 years old and has been ridden like a Dakar for the past 60 000km`s. I have a WR450 which is more than capable and some days I would have love to be on it than the Dakar. The Beemer never missed a beat and I had an off losing a indicator but that was more to do with my fitness level than anything else. I booked this trip for my 50th birthday and would do it again in a heartbeat. Most bikes are capable I suffered a little bit in some sandy areas but it was due to tire choice. Heartbreak hill saw me flying up and on the open stretches enjoyed the comfort of the Beemer. Put this trip on your bucket list all I want to say.

Thanks Hardyyes In the company of Husky 501s the Dakkie & KLR probably looks like boat anchors on Cadillac suspension. But they also do certain others things better...like not run out of fuel every 200 yards. So I’m quite interested to know how they coped on the rough stuff, because they can be ridden there & back as well

Lem, there was a lot of friendly banter on this trip about bike choice. I enjoy giving Hardy a bit of flack about the thumpers, but truth be told, they did great and managed everything the trip through at them (or they at the trip.... :peepwall:)

Edit: Given the choice, I would do this trip on nothing else than a lightweight enduro bike, bearing in mind we did not to ride the bikes to Nam and back. I understand Hardy's concerns about reliability but honestly feel that a well maintained Austrian is a reliable bike as well. (There was a Honda XR which completed the trip on the bakkie with the BMWG450x afterall :peepwall:)

 Why would you not want to make it easier and more enjoyable for yourself? You just have to look at the videos above to see the difference. Dwerg is a very good rider and would most probably have cleared that climb on his 450, and so would most others.

If you don't mind duck paddling through sand and falling over on rocks, I guess the thumper will do

Lem - Dwerg is 60cm tall and that is why he had to "adjust the clutch"
I was riding a thumper and had no problem getting up the hill. I am however 1,97m tall

Nice two digs in one sentence  :thumleft:

I'll try to be kind when we get to the Twyfelfontein and Crater section   :pot:

Your riding skills is not in question Jaco - The duck's disease is not your fault, and anyone that struggles to flatfoot the ground when you hit a loose rock will stall a bike every now and then.
My fall came after Wereldsend and can be described as a fucking spectacular example of how to attack the largest rocks NEXT to the trail.

Just the usual banter  :thumleft:

At least on the DR I had excuses. Would’ve been embarrasing if I stalled the 450 going up that hill

1978. It's 6am, mid winter...two up on a XL 185S ... off to my first casino ever with all of R40 and we've got a full tank of fuel, so enough to get there we reckon.... that's determination...

The descent after the steps was tricky- off-camber and loads of loose rocks

We stop at the bottom of the pass to regroup. The ride has been awesome today and it's hard to believe that it just gets better from here. A local male starts playing loud music on his iPad complete with solar charger. Hardy scolds him and he moves off..... :peepwall:

I try and sneak a pic of the Himba woman, pretending that I'm taking a pic of @Dwerg in tha background. They are on to me however and start complaining immediately.

The Specialised Team hand out packets of chips to them all and with that the complaining stops....
