Calling all 690 owners Bought One!!!!
« on: August 20, 2018, 07:02:55 am »
bSo I have sold my wifeís bike and now Iím in the market for a 690

I need some true life information. Are the 2009-2011 really as bad as they say? Iíve been told they vibrate more, not a true 690cc and have endless trouble with throttle bodies, stalling and breaking down. Can this be fixed? If so at what cost.

Iíve also been told to stay away from anything older than a 2014 690, unfortunately these are a little out of my price range.

Is the 2012-2013 the one to go for then with the updated motor and throttle issues possibly still there, but better?

I would like to spend 65-70, but if the right bike came along at 75k I would try make a plan.

I donít want all the rally fairings ect, I prefer the more ďdirt bikeĒ look. They also add 20-40k on top of the price.

Take it away dogs, letís hear it   :thumleft:

I have a 690R 2010 model with nearly 78000 on it. Use it on a daily basis. Great little machine, buy it and enjoy.

The attached doc file (KTM Facts.docx) may give you an idea what to expect.
(OK I must say I'm an old toppie who's days of racing, to be windgat to impress the girls is over but still ride the bike on a near daily basis. That is why the tire and chain consumption is so low)

Iíve seen some guys ask a bit much for their bikes especially with a rally kit which is almost dead money. A mint low mileage 2014 should trade for 60-65 so 70-75 should buy you a nice example privately

Are those little KTM Powerparts screens that fit to the headlight shroud worth fitting?

Congratulations and welcome to the 690 family.
The screen takes the wind off my chest but not my head. I'm about 6 foot tall.
It does work but its definitely not like sitting behind your Gold wing screen.
Cheers

D606's are good, just very soft, you'll get around 3000km out of a rear, same with Pirelli MT21's. I've got a D908 on the rear, it's moer hard  :thumleft:

Congrats.  And my mates who are in the know say the 2011 has the best suspension of all.

Tires - Motoz Desert H/T if you are planning to do a lot of dirt riding.  In my view the nicest one out there and it makes you ride sand as if you have done it your whole life.  Not overly noisy (much less than the 606).

Congrats! looks like a nice specimen.

Re: Screen, If you are tall yes.  I'm 6ft as well and takes the wind of my chest and makes 120km/h pretty easy whereas before here by 105 you will start hating life.  having klean air on helmet in the face is great. I've done some pretty steep climbs and downhills and did a few jumps. Screen didn't get in the way.

I'm with Amsterdam on the Motoz back... the rear is probably the best knobbly that you can still use on the street I've ever had. Grips extremely well, sand is awesome with it, gravel is excellent.
The front - my verdict is still out. Sometimes I love how it behaves other times not. It's never let me down though. It's just got some odd characteristics. Like ...it's not gradual. It's got "areas" of grip, when it grips there it's EXCELLENT grip, but if you are inbetween the "areas" it feels vague or something. makes sense?
I think if I do so again I'll put Motoz rear with MT21/D606 front.

Yes I know many who will use nothing but the MT21 front and I have seen some of those guys ride it really hard both on and offroad.
