Now if you ride around in the desert long enough you can even find Table Mountain. But the sea? That is elusive  as them pesky little flowers Maybe its the drought.

I think you were riding in an area that hasn't had the good winter rains of the Western Cape and Namaqualand. The reports have been that the flowers were / are great in those areas, when its not raining or cloudy.

Hi De Ho
Cant really give you a GPS rout (dont have one on the 990)
But
When it was possible we tried to avoid Tar
990 (2008) and 1200gs  (2008) both have a thirst for petrol if you just think about going near the speed limit, This must be taken into account.
DAY 1
Wilderness - Merweville
Via -Dyssseldorp-Prince Albert-Merweville
Merweville is a village that has been forgotten by time, but camping and BB is available

Day 2
Merweville- Calvinia
Merweville-Sutherland-Middilpos-Calvinia
Some truly amazing passes getting you into and out of Sutherland. I can recommend.
After Middilpos we encounter hectic road works  massive trucks flying down dirt and sometimes sandy road made things rather dusty and just a little bit frightening.
Note
Do not try and get accommodation in Calvinia during the "Vleis Festiville"
We found accommodation (Just)and had a jolly fine time.

Day 3
Calvinia-TouwsRiver
Calvinia-Nieuwoudtville-South to the R355-Touwsriver.
Went to see the flowers at Nieuwoudtville but only found a bike "Sanctuary" The bikes are so tightly packed into that dusty shed that you cant really dream as much as you wish,
The next leg was always a fuel issue No deviations or getting lost allowed, The  guy at the Tankwa road stall told us that the tented camp sold petrol to "Bikers" As we are Motorcyclist we were excluded.
Kept the speeds below 90 and at 300klms the fuel light had not come on AWSOME KTM!!!!!
The BMW kept breaking down TYPICAL BMW                                            Slow puncture
