How Do I Stop The Red Fungus Growth ?
« on: September 14, 2018, 11:52:58 am »
The chrome work on my 400 T has quite some rust on it. Its cleaning up nicely, and if you stand back a bit, looks like new. The pin heads are still there, and if I just leave it, the rust will come back.

What can I use to slow down (or stop) it ?

Clear coat should work. And also clear nail polish for smaller areas or if you want to only cover the pitted areas.

Selfde prinsiep as jou tin foil.

Clear coat should work. And also clear nail polish for smaller areas or if you want to only cover the pitted areas.

It will, but seems like lots of work because I will have to strip the bike. What stops rust is if you cut off the oxygen supply. In years past I always used silicone spray. Works well but makes a bleddie mess and you can never put anything else on it again, unless you acid dip. I want to avoid that for now.

I'm also a big believer in using parafien. It cleans, oils and seals, but again, its messy and you have to apply regularly.

Hence I'm looking for other ideas. new products etc.

I use a product called Nevr dull. It cleans easily almost like a brasso but seems to leave a protective layer so you don't have to clean that often.

Just can't seem to find it in SA anymore.

Old, grey, crafty...

You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait, the grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas. Enthusiasts are fighters. They have fortitude. They have staying qualities. Enthusiasm is at the bottom of all progress. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it, there are only alibis.

What I do is to clean the "rusted" chrome-work until there is no sign of rust.

However, if left like this, these pinholes of rust comes straight back and keeps growing.

So I clean the chrome, then apply Russist or Rustfix, a chemical "converter" undercoat, which I wipe off clean DIRECTLY after application.

In fact you can apply the coating and wipe it off again with same rag.

This undercoat penetrates the small pinholes and at least seriously slow down the rate of decay.

The coating, once wiped clean, is invisible.
