Honda Quest - Day 2

This day was seriously tough! Most of us tried to go to bed early last night to get some much needed rest, we knew this day would be a lot longer and more practical and that there would be some curveballs along the way. We were told that breakfast will be ready at 8h00

I set my alarm for 7h00...... Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Wishful thinking much?
We had the full on airhorn and shouting-us-loud rude awakening at 5 bells. It was dark. It was cold. And we had 15 minutes to get into full riding kit.

Off for a brisk 1 hour walk in the dark as a group. We were just in time for sunrise at the dam.

The day consisted of bike prep and maintenance, medical emergency briefings, tube replacement tests, getting to know the CRF1000L Africa Twin DCT a lot more intimately - some more than others I must add - let's say that we now have a couple more participants that have joined the "farming" profession. We had more written tests, we were individually interviewed by the Specialized Adventures staff, being scrutinized at ALL times. It was daunting, it was hectic. Not for the feint-hearted. Each and every one of us came out of the interview with long faces and head damage.
It was not exactly lekker.

Its hard to say how one feels going through this boot camp. Being pulled this way and that. There's so much of the unknown. It really plays on your mind. Mind games every minute of the day, it seems.

And as for the Africa Twin DCT. Well, it's amazing! I didn't exactly feel comfortable what with not having a clutch or gear lever, but it comes quickly and the bike is so capable. It truly is a confidence-inspiring piece of engineering. It is surprisingly nimble for its weight, easy to manage at slow speeds and makes technical riding a real breeze! I really really really like this bike!

This lowveld boy is freezing cold in his tent and needs some shut eye...

Here are some lekker pics from the day

I will probably be flamed for this, but the whole airhorn and shouting, rondfok-mars and doopkaptein thing seems a bit childish.

Maybe I dont get it.

They gotta whittle down the field, so put them under duress, waiting for the cracks to appear.

I've no idea what the quest is about but I assume they're getting tested on many levels, stress being one of them.

Do you laugh? Do you cry? Can you get on with the job while getting fucked around?

Does remind me of the army days, though .......... definitely something to laugh about.  :thumleft:

It's an awesome experience being on Quest bootcamp, I've never done anything like this before.

The cold is horrible, our tent was reading 5deg around 5am this morning.  Sleeping bags and inners doesn't always work as advertised...

I was pleasantly surprised by the DCT yesterday in the rocks and hills. At first it's strange, you want to grab a clutch to have that extra bit of control, but soon realise it's more forgiving on the Africa Twin because it's not there.  It can put-put slowly around obstacles as easy as, or sometimes better, than a big bike with a clutch.

Last day! Will see what it has in store for us.
