100% agreed last year had David, Donny, Gery & Willem at Dakar, then this year our off-road speedsters Ross Branch & Kenny Gilbert will want to perform. Plus Stuart Gregory currently at the roof is a hardened enduro rider and sure to be consistent. Next year all being well there should be two SA Ladies Taye Perry and Kirsten Landman, Donny van den Langerberg is also preparing for 2020.

I really like Van Beveren and hope he can pull it off this year, especially since he self-destruct chasing himself last year

The fact that he rides a Yamaha doesn't faze me at all as I've never been a brand specific person.

Cannot wait for the race to start - thanks for getting it going JK  :thumleft:

That Yamaha bike looks amazing. I see its branded as a Tenere. ;D

Only 10 stages, this must be the shortest Dakar ever!? I was also surprised that never went north of Lima because there is a lot of sand and dunes that way too, almost all the way up to Ecuador. It only becomes more tropical around 200km south of the border.

The dunes fields near Marcona and Moquegua are really hard to ride. Huge dunes, hundreds of meters high, trapped in mountains. There is one dune called Cerro Blanco near Nazca which is 1,200m high and starts at 900m above sea level; I don't believe its possible to ride up it (too steep for too far), but even riding down it would be really crazy, because it has dunets on it that break the slope and these will make 90-degree changes in the down slope. If I was organising the Dakar, I would definitely include it in a stage.  Here are a few screenshots.

It is about 10km SE of Nazca (background), away from the Nazca lines and not in a sensitive area.

I was able to plot two routes down the dune that have an "exit" that are not in mountains or cliff face. Navigation would be key because a wrong turn off the top could mean you end up completely trapped. the start of the route would be on the right (east) and would also make a good place to start a special stage. It is easily reached by tar road and is at an altitude of about 1700m.

The route follows a track west before going off piste and climbing 300-400m vertically up onto the crest of the dune, which would be followed for while. The blue route would turn south and drop a feew hundred metres down and over a couple of big, broken dunes before plunging really fast to 900m into a rocky valley with dry river bed. The slope looks really, really steep but would be relatively smooth as the sand is somewhat protected and less whipped up by the easterly prevailing wind.

Another view of the lower section. Although it would less easy to make a mistake on nav here, if you were to turn off too early you might end up trapped against the rocky slope on the right side of this picture and getting out once against it could be hard or impossible,

The red route finds it way down perhaps the steepest section of this dune on the north side, dropping a vertical distance of 600m in one swoop over uneven sand and probably dunettes judging from the dappled texture of the photo.

Whatever, I hope they will include this dune in the 2019 route, it is something I have been looking at for years after driving past it in 2009, but never had the chance to get really close to it.

If I could choose any two boys from our Offroad series who would do well at Dakar its Ross and Kenny G.
Would I be jinxing it to expect top 10 from both of them ?
