701 side stand dongel
« on: November 20, 2018, 12:42:29 pm »
Just broke my side stand switch while offloading the bike off the trailer. A new switch is around R1200. Has anyone fitted the dongle? Where to buy and cost?
I've seen some mods on the 690, will they work on a 17-701?

I bought one here - http://www.ebaystores.com/SmartMoto/KTM-/_i.html?LH_SellerWithStore=1&LH_TitleDesc=1&_fsub=17458706012&_sasi=1&_sid=899086662&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322

I have one that I bought for a 2016 KTM 690.  You can come try it if you want and then order one and replace.

You don't need a dongle for the 16 models. There are a few easy cheap fixes - the one uses a magnet taped to the switch to fool the magnetic switch, the other a small resister (that is what is in the dongle box! 20cents worth). See here:
&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR0MIhSbfBM5VWk_mUB4dqIDycUgKICBavMDVJuNwcSBWzXGugJQl_7p5lQ The 2016 is also different from the 17 onwards which requires a more sophisticated fix as they need to be Euro4 safety compliant. @Amstredam thanks I'll send a PM later.
@BiG DoM I've seen some mods on YouTube but they are for 690's and I don't know if they will work on 17-701's.
Did you find a 701 yet?

As far as I know the 701 (and I'd presume the new 690 also) have more electronics in this switch than merely a resistor.
Apparently there's a circuitry in there that sends a pulse train over the bus picked up by the ECU..... so gone are the days of a quick 'jippo-ing' or the more sophisticaqted (LOL) resistor soldering.
If all works then yes, you may relocated unit & magnet elsewhere, underseat seems to be a good place for this.... but I think you said it was broken.

Oh, and hearsay has it that dongles do owrk but cause a permanent error-message on the dash.
I dunno, got a dongle but have not used it - hey Amsterdam, we seem to have a thing in common ek se!  :P

2017 on is Euro4 safety complaint and supposedly tamper proof

Oh and BTW they only say carry it do not fit it to cover themselves from the Euro4 law.

And yes Mayhem I got me a 701 and loving it  :ricky:  Keeping the 610 at the moment so my son can join the adv rides.

Got my bike back from service on Friday and Johan (Eddie's mechanic) had removed the magnet from the side stand and taped it to the side stand switch so that I could still ride the bike.
On Saturday I undid the repair to see if I could repair the switch and get it working again. It turns out that just the plastic mounting bracket was broken (a whole
R 35 odd ront) which I have ordered but no stock. So in the meantime I made an attaching block out of aluminum that looks like it will do the job much better than the plastic one. Just a heads up, the placement of the switch over the magnet is quite precise and took quite a while to set up.

Well the mechanic essentially did the sidestand magnet jippo - one needs to get the magnet in the right place before taping it tight and stashing the switch under the seat near the battery. Strange no one has come up with a guard for the fooking idiot switch.

I just need to once again say how terrible these electronic "safety" stuff is on modern bikes.

The problem is the Euro4 regulations are insisting on them - sidestand switch is one of them and must be tamper proof! True story.
