2014 LC GSA Propshaft Failure
« on: November 23, 2018, 01:51:52 pm »
50000km and it's finished. Splines on both sides. Anyone else had a similar issue? My air cooled one had 90000 km on when I sold it and it was perfect. I'm really disappointed.

I have seen a few of these.

Typically what happens is that the boot that seals the swing arm gets a little tear or becomes loose on one end. As a result water and dust leaks in and results in premature wear and even rust.

Another fairly common cause is that people do long water crossing or spend excessive time in short crossings (i.e. stalling). The air inside the diff will be warm when you enter the water and when it becomes submerged in the water the air cools down. Air pressure is reduced inside the swing arm and water gets sucked in through the breather. The water reduces the lubricating qualities of the oil etc and you get premature wear. Enough water will cause rust. I always have the drive shaft serviced after a trip that featured several or long water crossings.

BTW, this is not unique to the LC. The water/breather issue also affected the DOHC models.

The cost to replace is apparently about 40k and a 2nd hand unit is 15k. I've gone for the 2nd hand unit for now. Fair enough, I've used the bike for exactly the same function as the previous one. Even to the same places.

Saw this with the older Hilux 4x4 bakkies.

I had conserns about this and BMW said they would check drive shaft splines as part of the service at a small charge, sounds like good insurance to have it checked regularly.
It is a real problem and does need to be checked especially if you ride a lot in wet weather and conditions.

This is a well documented issue on LC's this year alone.BMW will be inspecting shafts on services.Check that the mechanics replace the boot properly after service!!
Note:Always ask the dealer to check the shaft at service!(And make sure it is documented on service docket

I had my drive shaft replaced (BMW LC GSA 2014) out of warranty but I had been compaining to BMW of a knocking sound prior to warranty expiring.

Evenutally they strted to listen to me and when they opened shaft found rust and damage, the boot was split.

all replaced and paid for by BMW, because I had a record of reporting the the knocking sound prior to warranty expiration.

Must admit, was starting to think I was hearing things

Is it safe to assume that since the LC, when they moved the swingarm from the right to the left, that there may be an issue with the boot not always sealing properly and that is why the failure rate is higher?

Hahaha!! It has nothing to to with left, right (or wrong). Just in the design change something might have been compromised...

I don't know much about bikes, but a pipe and head job sounds incredible!
