Gold Reef City - Question
« on: November 28, 2018, 08:41:34 am »
Greetings!

Has anyone been there lately? Is it still a good place to take kids?

I have been once or twice, the latest in 2004 and even then some of the rides were closed to maintenance.

Don't want to trek all the way there, just to have it be another Ratanga!

Oh, and is there decent accommodation close by! (And no, not interested in staying in the park as the prices are ridiculous)... happy to travel a bit.

My son was there in Jan, and was quite happy. Just avoid weekends and public holidays

I am also pulling in here.

I am taking my two buys (6, 9 years) to see Guns N Roses tomorrow night, and on Friday we want to sightsee before flying back on Saturday morning.

I also looked at Gold Reef City, as well as the reptile park.

My kids have been there 2-3 times this year, always have fun.
Its very much like Ratanga; from what I recall of it. What is wrong with Ratanga that makes you not want to go?

We were there about 3 years ago. Place was quite rundown, half the shops open and most of the rides had been taken down to make room for office blocks and parking lots. Wasn't exceptionally good value for money.

Ok the GRC rides are quite well maintained, only one is usually down at a time for maintenance.
Even got a new ride this year, so its current.   Anaconda , Jozi Express and Golden Loop are classics

I was there around 2 years ago & swore I'd never go back. Dozens of 'clients' throwing rocks into queuing crowds & screaming "this is how we fight" & other nonsense... after 15 minutes security arrived & looked around dumbly not knowing what to do or where to go... They eventually took 2 people to the security office & ignored scores of others involved... many still holding half bricks & making threats.

Cant even remember the entrance fee but after 3 hours in a queue we managed only a single ride & left to clean up scrapes and bruises picked up in said queue.

It never seizes to amaze me how they just seem to carry it around with them!

Another option is the animal park at Monte Casino, in a better part of town at least
