How far can we ride unil we run out of petrol?
At 07h00 this morning Blazes, Martin and I met up a local garage, filled our tanks to the brim and set off to find out.
The bikes used was my fuel-guzzling 650 Transalp, Martin's beautiful 1150 GS with its enormous fuel tank and Blazes's frugal Dakar. Quite a mixed bag, economy and capacity wise, I am sure you will agree.
I was carrying an additional 15 litres of fuel in three jerrycans with a simple plan in mind. Ride till I run out of fuel, refill with only 5Lt and ride until out of fuel again. The aim was to -
- see if my range would exceed 350km (what I would need in Namibia later this year);
- how the bike will behave when it runs dry (Hopefully without causing a wheel lock-up in soft sand or throwing me over the bars in a fit of fuel coughing);
- how easy the bike will start again after being re-filled.
