If they want to be difficult and full of shite about it they can make the case that the vehicle is not roadworthy and impound it.

Very lucky.  Next time you get stopped by the cop whose wife just ran off with the KFC bike delivery guy and bang!  Impounded.

R500 if only one plate on a car is missing. No number plate on car or bike impound.

If your number plate fell off, then it can just be a fine.

But if you have wilfully obscured your number plate, then it can be seen as obstruction of justice and you can get arrested and the bike impounded.

Personally I do not have experience with number plate issues on the bike but drove down the Garden Route a few years ago with mountain bikes on the back of the car and was fined R500 due to them obscuring the rear number plate of the car.

cops threatened to impound mine a few years back because of no numbe rplate, basically stating that the vehicle is not roadworthy without it. That is absolute rubbish of course - vehicle roadworthy requirements are very specific....and definitely make no mention of a number plate.

He eventually tore up my license disk, and told me I have to have the bike re-roadworthied within 3 weeks, as they will be marking it as unroadworthy in enatis. This I did, only to be told when I went to the licensing dept that there was no such record on their system.

So, basically a cop being a dick.

The problem is that this doesn't help you at the time, as they will simply do as they wish, with no consequences.

My own experience is that a perspex plate gets covered easier  with dirt   when riding gravel .

I was given a R500 fine recently.  Motorcycle cop followed me down the M1.  Eventually caught me when I stopped...

Had the plate in the top box.

My strategy is simple:  I have a plate but I don't pay the fine.  Much less explaining to do.

They seems to handle it differently as they like.
I have had one fine of each,
R500 for not having a plate at all
R1000 for hiding the the plate, reason for fine Obstruction of Justice   :o

Makes perfect sense.

No plate:  They cannot prove in a court that it didn't accidently fall off, i.e. that you had intent to obstruct justice.
Hiding plate:  You supplied all the proof required to prove Obstruction of Justice in a court.

Be careful about the above.  Unless you have read the applicable SANBS Standards for roadworthiness you can't say that for sure.

Yup, they can wave you off with a warning, or at the worst, impound.  A lot depends on the rider attitude to the offence.  TIA!!!!

I don't really think this this would be too much of an issue

Apologize while wiping off the mud; no way they can prove you did not pick it up whilst riding that day  :thumleft:

I guess if your bike is clean barring the license plate....that might be a more complicated issue to explain.
