Before entering the DS scene, HD was in my blood. Had the chance to enjoy each member of the 'family'.
I've owned 2 883s previously. Road long distances with ease and thoroughly enjoyed it. Did a trip to Colesberg with bigger capacity engines, and as said, cruising at 140km/h is sufficient-solo. Did numerous trips to the north coast and back, all with a 12l tank, carried a small jerry can of about 4l on the luggage rack of the sissy bar.
Converted one of the 883s to 1200. Rebored, bigger pistons, ape hangers, wider rear tyre, the works...was alot of fun
Rode with a crew, mixed group of bikes/CCs etc on many occasions to Clarens/Golden Gate. If you're not pressured into riding at 180-260km/h just to keep up, you'll be ok!
Will I go back to HD? Maybe someday soon :thumleft:

For fun around the 'hood and going for coffee (or to have your mani-pedi-crackwax) you would do much better to buy...

a VESPA !

Believe me, they are more fun around town than any of the 5 other bikes I own.
I even commute to work daily on mine now.
Nimble as a plastic, no clutch, just turn up the volume and off you go...  :ricky:

PS: Unlike the very serious faces I see on most of the "in character" H -D riders around,
Vespa riders are smiling from ear to ear.
The ladies also smile at you more when you are on a Vespa.

Not a real Vespa then.....

Because they also like the feel of the wind blowing over their vaginas

Thanks for all the responce will see what happens, like the saying goes the right bike will find you.  Leaning towards the 1200 but there is just so much more 883 in my price range than 1200s

If you really want something like this do yourself a favour and go test an Indian Scout rather, stonking motor, can take a corner and actually handles quite well.... makes the Sportster look stupid really.... :thumleft:

I have a 1200 sportster

It is the biggest piece of shit I have ever ridden
It has no brakes, no suspension, handles like a pig
Two up the suspension bottoms out at 80kmh on marine drive in PE
It is uncomfortable to ride any distance on it
The only thing nice is the motor has awesome torque

If you are used to riding decent motorcycles you will be disappointed

This sounds like me describing my Jeep TJ Wrangler.  It is the worst thing to drive ever, but I love it and cant bring myself to sell it.

Hey this sounds like me!!
Suspension sucks, brakes sucks nut I love it!
You can sit the whole day at 140kmph and still get 20kmpl. Seriously, 1200gs and 1190 gives me 16kmpl for same driving speeds.

I have a nice thick aftermarket seat on so mine is fun for long distance riding, it has 80 000km on btw...  (motor was redone 2000km ago)

joined a fast gang the other day and did 170kmph easily two up.

I wouldn't go for an 883 but rather the 1200, get something with more mileage to suit your budget. With a carburettor so you can get the idle even slower :)

I have had good feedback with both 883s and 1200s fitted with BoosterPlugs. In gear acceleration improves a lot.
BoosterPlug, LED Spots, Tool Tubes, RustStop, Kappa Screens, Top boxes, Tank Bags, ATG Gear - whatever works for me.
