We pulled out of Tiffendell after having signed the indemnities at about 18h40 and headed towards Volunteershoek Pass which would take us down to WarTrail. Unfortunately we were riding directly into the setting sun and I could see just about nothing with the glare. Once the sun had gone down it was actually a huge relief, at least you could see where you were going.

Volunteershoek Pass was no problem, just a quick stop to take the pic and before long we were at the bottom and heading towards Lundeans Nek.

Lundeans Nek was a mess. Sure it was getting dark so we couldn't see that well, but it was in a terrible state, far worse than when I last rode it 5 odd years ago.

Eventually we got to the Lundeans Nek sign at the top of the pass and we could pose for the last of the pictures.

I have to admit that this felt as good as finishing Comrades Marathon.

The sun was long gone, but there was just enough light for the final pic, it was now 19h30, we had taken 2 full hours ;longer than I had planned, but that was fine.

After a bit of admin, like replacing the batteries in my GPS, pouring the 2l reserve fuel into my tank and phoning Sarah to tell her we were running late but ok, we headed down the pass in the pitch dark.

Now don't get me wrong, my KTM is an awesome bike, the engine really is bullet-proof, but that headlight sucks even more than my old XR's used to. This was the first time I had ever ridden it after dark and I could see absolutely nothing with it, and we still had to get down Lundeans and then another odd 100km back to Lupela Lodge along some not great dirt roads. For me this was the most difficult part of the trip. I rode on the extreme right hand side of the road, Kevin just behind me on the left so I could see from his light. It seemed to take forever to get back, but eventually we rolled into Lupela Lodge at 22h00.

Sixteen and a half hours is along time to spend on a bike, but it was worth it.

Challenge completed.
How can I be lost when I have got nowhere to go?

The photos of you guys at the respective boards are very amusing to see how your faces changed during the course of the day ! Very well done, I'm sure not many will tackle the whole Challenge in one day, so you've turned into a real Challenge. Great stuff.

Very nice riding report.

I will also have to give this a go, with the exception of the one pass maybe?

Some VERY cool videos and pictures on there. It's SGB's son that make them. Very entertaining, and it makes one want to go ride and ride and explore!

Slight comment, not trying to belittle what was a big day out.

I don't know whether the Ben10 "rules" say this or not, but according to me you can only claim a pass if you do the whole thing so on Naude's Nek that means you have to not turn off to Tenahead immediately but first have to ride down the other side of the pass until you get to the Naude monument. Only then have you actually done the whole pass.

Edit: had a look at the website now and it says only to the signs. So open to interpretation I guess.

Firstly, well done to Jon and Kevin for completing this little ride, I have known them both for many years and they are always a pleasure to be with and to ride with.

My son has a FB page and Youtube Channel called "In Search of Stories" ( Link to Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd7RwkghCWy_jmCO5_IxZAg/videos ) and he occasionally posts a video of our rides there.  He has one GoPro camera and a pocket camera for pictures, and we do not do "Take 2" or stopping for camera setup and stuff.  Footage gathered as it unfolds and he has one chance. I think he is doing a good enough job....
I really enjoy taking him along on the rides, I am really a lucky dad - imagine if he was into soccer or something stupid.....

Nice seeing you guys again.....  Maybe I should visit here a little more.  Are you still fighting about tyres, religion and KTM/BMW?   :laughing4:
Ride On!
