2009 - 990 Key

Hi Gents, I snapped the key of my 2009 990 in the fuel tank ages ago and have been riding with the spare. I have been meaning to get a new one and after some inquiries it would seem that because the keys are coded I would need a whole new kit with new keys new ignition and all at around R6k. I have the orange key and was always under the impression that it was to code a new key should i need one... I was wondering if any of you guys or gals had any experience with this??
