250 for tall 16 yr old
« on: February 08, 2019, 06:58:24 am »
I have a friend with a 16 yr old son who is 6'7.
She'd like to get him a 250 and asked what is the best bike that he wont look silly on it being so tall.
What would you suggest?

I'm assuming this is a bike for commuting?

He's 6'7, he's going to looks big on any bike. But if she wants a tall bike, get him an XR400  :deal:
- you reckon that thing will pop a wheelie? We're about to find out, SLAP that pig!

Agree with Kortbroek.  Bikes are not built for tall okes.  We simply don’t look as cool as our fellow riders of ‘normal’ proportion.

Don’t let looking silly put him off.  Get him a bike that he likes and one that can accommodate a raised seat, bar raisers and/or lowered pegs.  Most important thing is for him to ride in maximum comfort.

Wow that kid is tall and will still be growing.  Imagine feeding a 6'7   16 year old .... Ouch .... think he will need a custom built bike by the time he is 21 . You must also take his weight  into consideration . Wind resistance.  A 250 just wont have enough power once the wind blows .  :lol8:

Out of interest, what is he going to use the bike for...at 16 legally, he is only allowed a 125 (no prejudice)

If it is for offroad/racing, all the newer bikes is the same size..."small", the reason I'm stuck with what I have, from back in the day when it was still build big.
Love the XR400 for that reason, and the fact that it is an awesome bike all in all - will always remember the amount of amateurs lining up for the Paris/Dakar in Paris on them.

Bottom line, you only look silly on a bike if you ride like a dick...check out David Knight, at 6'7" (the guy in front  :o ) nobody (NOBODY) told him he looked silly   :thumleft:

Yes I agreed. When I was 16 I would have been happy with any size bike lol.
But I know some are taller than others, thinking offroad roadworthy 4 strokes?
They normally have an inch or 2 over road bikes.
But is there one taller than the others?
Or easy to increase seat height?

Will mostly be for commuting.
Boys will be Boys.
And girls are darn thankful for that

I always think of the legalities , at 16 he is legally only allowed to ride a 125 , irrespective of his size , the legal ramifications of him being involved in an accident are pretty scary for the youngster and his parents and that does not matter whether it is his fault or not , and in the event of a fatality it is even worse . While numerous court hearings might eventually clear him the legal costs will be enormous .

For sure..

.....he is only allowed a 125 (no prejudice)

I started riding at 5, started going on the road at about 14/15 on my XR200, eventually getting my license at 45..   :imaposer:
Thus "no prejudice"

But times have changed. traffic has changed - even though my kids started riding at 5, winning off road at national level, norrefok will I let them ride on the road.
It does not matter if he is legally on a 125, or illegally on a 400, in the case of something serious, the self-recrimination stays the same.

But by the sound of it, it sounds like a (single?) mom that has logistics issues - not sure where and how possible, but in Stellenbosch e-bikes is an enabler, there is even kids cycling in from the nearer farms.

Bikes are not built for tall okes.

And neither for short okes. I have seen many a yearning eye from short guy's that will never be able to ride most bikes just because they are just too damn short. Must be terrible. :'( :(

And not every one has skills like this oke.

Very impressive, but what does he do at a red light? Does he stand next to the bike and wait for the light to go green?  :imaposer:
