Pre 03 GS650 owners check your front forks.
« on: October 09, 2008, 08:43:27 pm »
If you ride a pre 03 GS650 have a look at this thread it's a good couple of pages but it is vital you understand what happened. They are still not 100% sure the design was changed after 03 or in 02. In a nutshell it looks like all pre03 Gs's front fork design or castings are rubbish and are prone to self destruction. In this same thread there are other people mentioning the same that happened to them.

The post is not meant to scare the living lights out of people or to start a bashing by others, but to make you aware of a potentially serious problem with the forks.

It's also noted on F650.com

This is the girl on ADVrider that lost it.
Crash in Destruction Bay

The difference between the 03 and later models. You can clearly see where the problem area is, around the axle points. On my 04 model the newer fork tubes is fitted.

The answer to how many is 10 so far

The full thread at advrider is 12 pages, link below

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=371650

At this stage those failures are in the US and Australia.

It is believed only machines produced prior to Dec 2002 are affected.

You can check the status of your machine at the following thread on advrider

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8084666#post8084666

Any information on failures in Sth Africa would be appreciated as would information on the production date and which forks are fitted.

Looking at the "pores" on the inside of the fork legs, kak castings.... plus the grain structure is very coarse, the problem can easily be residual stresses from the casting process around a stress raiser like that change of section, as I said, just a kak casting.

The new casting may have been a change of supply too, not just of design.

The answer to the question re BMW response is easy

In 2003 BMW advised they were unaware of any such failures worldwide

They then went on to say "you must have hit something"
They also left a repaired machine with the old LHS fork leg as only the RHS broke.

In 2008 BMW have advised the rider shown in the pics at the start of this thread
"We are unaware of any such failures".

My 02 registered Dakar ( production date 10/2001 according to the VIN ) has the old style fork legs.Mine still look fine but wonder if its an accident waiting to happen particularly considering the kind of roads we ride on in SA ?
The new design does look a lot stronger so clearly it worried them enough to warrant changing it even if the failures were just from a bad batch of castings and not a design flaw . Anybody know what a set of new fork legs cost ?

Don't go ballistic about it, there's no hard evidence that thousands of bikes are plague by this, and it's 2008 now and the effected models is pre02 so the bikes still lasted a good couple of years before the problem showed up.

You can't see the effect in any case as the cracks start on the inside of the forks. This post is meant that should you donner near sue BMW, because you know about it now.  ;)
