Honda Adventure Roads 2019
« on: February 23, 2019, 10:21:24 am »

In 2018 Specialised Adventures was approached by Honda Europe and Ride & Drive Communications and Events to offer technical support for the prestigious Honda Adventure Roads 2019 event.

After successful negotiations they were appointed as preferred service provider.

When I received the call from Hardy to ask whether I would like to be part of his team, I of course accepted without hesitation.

This event is now on our doorstep and we hope to give you a bit of insight of how this goes down.

In the meantime, you can get some basic information of the event here:

I left for Specialised Adventuresí HQ on Thursday just after mid day.

I always look up to the drive to Beaufort West, whilst really excited about the section from there to Loxton.

25% gravel only, or am I misreading it?

Not quite quest stuff, but I am sure will be super organized as normal...

Looking forward to hear what the European "adventure bikers" think of our "wild gravel rides".... all 25% of it...(wink)
I heard a little bird singing that Juan Barreda might join the ride for a short stint, as one of Honda Europe's ambassadors....but hey, you know little birds... sometimes they turn out to be Mynas, making a loud noise, chasing away the locals...
Addicted to riding big bikes in tricky places.
Rode most of Southern Africa.
Currently riding a slightly pimped black Africa Twin Manual, named Fezile

You have read correctly Striggs.  Certainly not similar to Quest - True Adventure and never meant to be.  It is a much more relaxed event showing Clients some of the beautiful parts of our country.

Ride & Drive have put together quite a spectacular route, without going too far off the beaten track.

The quietness of the Karoo and hospitality of the Specialised Adventures team led to a good nights sleep.

The next morning the work started.

In simple terms, our task during the event is to be prepared for any and every eventuality from a technical perspective.

In excess of 35 Africa Twin Adventure Sports were shipped ex Europe and awaits us in Durban, where we will PDI, fit windscreens, fit navigational equipment etc. prior to the VIPís arrival.

During the event we need to ensure that the bikes remain in tip top condition, attend to any technical issue on an adhoc basis and perform the services as per manufacturer specification.

This meant that we had to think of every tool possibly required to perform whatever task gets thrown at us.

As if this is not enough, Hardy had to put together a parts list of things we might need on the trip, including all the service items.  To put it into perspective, we need to change about 200 liters of oil for the 1,000km run in service.

Leaving nothing to chance, we went over everything once again and did some alterations and maintenance on the trailer, packed the vehicles and ticked off the last boxes on our checklist.

Yesterday and today was our traveling days to Durban.  After again making sure that we have everything covered, we set off yesterday around mid day for our overnight destination, being Bloemfontein.

We left Bloemfontein this morning and traveled the last stretch to Durban, meeting up with another member of the Specialised Adventures team (Janco) just after Estcourt.

It was amazing to see how beautiful and green  the Freestate currently is, not to mention KZN.

Upon arrival we were met by one of the Ride & Drive team members who welcomed us and assisted with the necessary check in etc.

We also had to pick up our 4th and last team member at the airport.

After meeting the rest of the Ride & Drive team, the daily planning meeting was held, followed by a great dinner and even better company.

And knowing what lies ahead tomorrow, I think itís time for a good nights rest.

The view from our tents.  (Yeah, weíre roughing it. )
