The same process is required to change the alternator stator.  Bloody rediculous. Have to do one next week.  :-[

That bearing is more rusted than I would expect from even a dry worn bearing.  It is not clear on the photo, but it seems like the copper from the armature is also more than just missing.

Does one need to do this to remove the starter?

No, not the starter.  Starter is fitted to the RHS of the motor and is accessible from the outside.

However, the starter sprague clutch is located behind the flywheel, and for that the motor must come out.

Also the alternator stator is located inside the flywheel and requires motor to be removed to replace.

Probably a total of around 40, if you include the repairs to the crank and sourcing parts.  A straightforward job like just replacing the stator is around 12 - 15hrs

You never said what caused this?

I suspect (although the owner is adamant that it is not the case) is that the rider missed a gear (or got a false neutral), motor over revved and while the revs were redlining he popped it back into gear.  The flywheel couldn't keep up with the sudden change in RPM and sheared the woodruff key holding it in place.
