KLR250
« on: March 07, 2019, 06:46:37 am »
So here is the story of a little KLR250 that got bought by my  inlaw, and after a couple of small trips with us, he parked it in his garage and covered it over and forgot about it.
Fast forward about 12 years and it has now been uncovered and cleaned. It has 1390 km on it.
Whats it worth?
This is not a crate story like in jou ma

Looks like it is in great condition, but the rear drum brake and the fact that it is kick start count against it (relative to other bikes in the same class from the same era, like the crf 230 , and the TTR 250...). Plus the fact that it was not widely sold in SA...

Probably 15-20k ...?

Officially imported for years and quite a few sold , but not as many as some of the other bikes available at the same time .

Just look at what a new 250cc bike will set you back. Anywhere between 60 - 85k

Sweet little bike. I'd push for 25k. You'd probably finally settle around 21-22k which is ok I guess.

This is a great bike for a student or for someone cash strapped to commute with. In the current economy, there are a lot of people where this little bike just makes good practical sense.

I had the exact same model for a number of years, amazing little bikes that are extremely bulletproof. Their only flaw is the lack of power, even when compared to other 250 4Ts, I eventually sold ours with 13500kms on the clock for R16K.
Dirty by nature!

It is really beautiful. It would be a shame to sell for sub-R20k. These go for R15k-R18k after they have had a rough life! This one looks BRAND new.

My friend ha a powder blue one, dependable little bikes but yes under powered even for a 250. Could never get the rear to spin on gravel even at seal level  Kickstart only but you can most likely start it by hand. Not a big bore thumper.

The 650 was going for R180 000 with 1km, this should then be 650/250 = 2.6, R69230 with 1km, with 1390km (Depreaciate at R38/km) R69 230 - R52 820 = R16 410....

Sadly Kawa did only bring it in for a few years when they started selling the KLR650 (fugly) back in 2006 in SA.
What helps, it was an official import.
I would like to agree that this bike may be worth R25k or even a tad more, but how the years of standing affected it may be an issue.
I once bought a bike that was standing for over 10 years in immaculate condition but it gave me endless issues, even the shocks started leaking and needed new seals.
Still, what do you get for R25k these days? Maybe even a collector may be interested. Test the waters and see what offers you get.

Do you perhaps know where / from who your inlaw bought it?
A friend of mine had one that his wife used here in the Cape Town. He sold it about 12/13 years ago.

A new Big Boy 250 sells for R25 000, and if you are lucky and take good care of the bike that POS will last about 5 years.

So I would say R25K for the Kawasaki is a good deal!  :deal:

Looks amazing but it all depends on how it was stored.. if those rubbers are perished or hard then you looking at a bike which will need a lot replaced, all the hoses, fork seals etc..

If I had to buy it I would like to get it for around R15 - R18k

If i was selling it I would  like to get R20 - R25k

I think if you market it right and the right buyer comes along you may push it to high 20's, maybe R28k
