Merzouga Rally 2019
« on: April 01, 2019, 04:14:01 pm »
I'm not picking up a thread on this rally this year despite a good few Saffas racing. Looks like Ross Branch got 6th and King Kenny 12th provisional on Stage 1  :thumleft: Nothing on Taye and Kirsten yet, I guess they're still out on the stage.

Looks like Ross got 3rd on the stage... WOW  :o :thumleft:
Kenny 13th  :thumleft:
Kirsten 37th
Taye 48th
Robert Gibbon showing no time yet, hope all is okay.

What makes this rally interesting is that the guys who won the KTM Rally Raid comps in Austrial, SA and NZ are racing the new KTM790'ss in the rally  :thumleft:

Seems I was too optimistic, Ross eventually given 6th on the stage. Sounds like the navigation was very tricky and poor Rob Gibbon had road book issues so ended up having to scroll manually which was difficult in the sand. He mentioned he hit the deck a few times in the soft stuff.

I'm holding thumbs for Kirsten & Taye... Dakar is calling!

Comment from one of Taye's supporters:

Taye Perry had a good 1st Stage at Afriquia Merzouga Rally but got lost with some guys on the last section and lost 40 minutes. Today she's gonna open it up and hang cable and get back on pace.
It's been rough for her as she is on her own over there, she has finally found a room 15 min from race HQ and has very little help getting her bike ready for the next day but we know how tough she is and that finish will be only that much sweeter! 💪

I'm really hoping some of the saffas help Taye out where they can, she's going it pretty much alone. Her bike also only arrived the day before the event so she wasn't able to get in the dune practice that Kirsten and the rest of the SA crowd where able to before the start. But we know she's tough as nails so I'm expecting her to fight back strongly as the week progresses  :thumleft:

Another good day for the saffers in th dunes, looks like Ross got another 6th, Kenny 12th, Taye ahead of Kirsten today in 42nd & 46th, Graham Sharp in 54 and Rob in 68th. I haven't seen Robs feedback but I'm assuming he had some grief again today with his tracker or road book.

Getting back to the two saffers riding the 790's, they're Greg Hodgskin and Christiaan Odendaal. They're racing in a class called Special Adventure (12 riders in the class) and whoever wins that class gets to keep their sponsored 790  :ricky:

A few pics snatched from FB. The quality photos credited to the Merzouga photographers..

1. First 3 of Rob. Getting sand out his boots. He got in so late yesterday that the medics insisted on checking him out so he had to explain to then that there's nothing wrong with him, he's just an amateur trying to focus on getting it right... which he didn't by doing 188km's instead of 88km's on the one special section  :o Watching his FB video updates he comes across as a very chilled out and humorous character  :thumleft:

2. Kirsten doing some sand surfing.

So yesterday & today is the marathon stage and they slept out in the dessert last night so not too much feedback. Generally it sounds like everyone had a good stage yesterday except maybe Rob Gibbon. He had an off, dislocated his shoulder and was forced to pop it back himself. After seeing the medics last night, it sounds like he's torn 2 ligaments so today he'll be riding the dunes pumped full of voltaren. He's still very positive so that's a bonus  :thumleft:
Ross & Kenny are styling and Taye & Kirsten are learning how to dune surf very quickly. Nothing like the deep end to get you swimming  ;D
Van Beveren is still leading the rally for Yamaha  :thumleft:

Both Taye & Kirsten are doing very well  :thumleft:

I'm just hoping Rob can pull through. The oke's been super positive all week but on last nights vid feedback you could see he was kakking off with pain big time. His shoulder popped out again in the stage and he was forced to ride like that with his throttle hand duct taped to the bike for support. Hard core stuff.

Just in from KTM SA:

"Kirsten Landman just crossed the finish at the Afriquia Merzouga Rally... which means she has officially qualified for the 2020 Dakar Rally!
She will now attempt to become the first African woman in history to finish the iconic event."  :ricky:   :hello2: Well done lady!!!
