Just done the 30000km service on my 2015 KTM 1190 Adventure S at RAD. Ouch, R9780!... This is after I've done the brakes and brake fluid, air & petrol filter, as well as the chain slider. I have to add that I added the KTM powerparts orange chainring as extra.... So all in all, probably not that bad. RAD service great as usual...

what is a chainring?
sounds like a keyholder?
what work was done additional to sparkplugs, valve timing and oil?

I really believe chain and sprocket costs as well as tyres and brake costs shouldn't be included in service price quotes. skews everything, could just as well add fuel if those are added.

I agree, when quoting a service, just the normal work and parts for that service should be quoted - I assume in the above case, the big costs were for valves checking/setting

hope you enjoyed the 1290?

why I/we make this point, is because ignorant people run around saying that KTM is expensive to maintain, which has not been my experience

The 1290 was ok... loved the headlight, cruise control and the "smooth" power. the power delivery lot different than my 1190... but that said... still prefer mine.. Can be because the loan bike needed some attention?

I dont mind sharing , The KTM parts came to under a grand , but I GET family discount , ( son works at KTM , technician)  he could help me with some shims , but the about R60.00 each , brake fluid R150.00 Hydrolic fluid R135.00  . Motul
engine oil ,R 600.00 another dealer specail , ( about R650.00  normal price)
 and then the labour that I did not pay for .
Just a stupid question ... How do one know what size chims to order?

You cant just order shims at random, you need to measure the clearance , if to tight you need to remove whats in their and subract the clearance from what you have , lets say the clearance need to be ( going to do mm for ease of explanation )
no clearance , but it need to be 2.5 mm so you remove the shim , sometimes their is a size on it , but if no size then measure the shim with a vernier , shim size is 10mm so you need to sub ract 2.5 to have clearance , shim size required is 7.5 mm , so you fit this shim and assemble , measure clearance again , if ok , fine , if not , remove and fit a shim smaller , we know it was a 7.5 next down is a 5 mm fit , measure .
hope this explains .
If clearance to big , then you need to add , again  , measure clearance , its more than 2.5 mm , remove shim , get one size bigger , measure , fit , check clearance , if in limit , assemble , if not , next size up .
Shimming is easy , but a lot of repeated measurements , and that is what you pay for in labor charges . you can however go buy a hand full of shims , but if you dont have a base size where do you start , by measuring
