Two wheel bike towing trailer. I have seen bikes pulling trailers at rallies. I guess I will have to ask local traffic cops. Thanks for reply.

My dad has a Goldwing (2 wheel) with trailer, but he has a permit the traffic department issued to him. He also told me they don't issue these permits anymore.  :thumleft:

Unfortunately - it's not legal. There's a previous thread we dealt with a while ago, which has the legal info & implications. Seems SA is far behind.... but who knows.

Due to "touring" planned overseas, wif wifey needing more packing space, we ended up deciding on one of these Uni-Go trailers. Cost around R 8k - and hold around 100kg.
They are available in UK & Europe - so will buy one when we get there... eventually!

Very nice - go to the Uni-go.com website and check the video trailer/demo.

Yes it's illegal. You're not allowed to tow anything with a bike.......BUT there's a loophole. I'm building a trailer for my bike and because it's going to be bolted on to the bike (like an extension to the bike) it qualifies as a "dolly". That means it doesn't need a road worthy certificate, although it must be road worthy (understand?). The "dolly" must display the number plate of the towing vehicle and must have working lights and flickers

Here's the thread - http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=7705.0
Don't look back, that's not where you're going.

So two wheel trailers are illegal ...but single wheel trailers fit in the loophole as a "dolly" ?

I have to ask the question: why would anyone want to tour on a bike and then take sooooo much stuff that they need a trailer? Aren't you defeating the object? What's the point?   :pot:

Riding a bike with pillion and camping equipment is heavy. (400kg). I tell you it is not much fun when in a town with slow traffic and stop and go. My wife is a "short arse" and has a problem when trying to mount the bike, she has to get on first and slide back on to pillion seat and then I climb on. ;D
A trailer would make things alot easier, thats all.
I have been told that a trike and a bike with sidecar are allowed to tow a trailer.
How do we get the transport dept to change the law????
Thanks for all your responses.

My neighbour had a similar trailer to the one Goose posted pics of in the early 80's. He hitched it to a 1.1 Yammie. Worked like a bomb. I rode the bike with the trailer fully (over) loaded and you didnt know it was there. Makes sense to me if you travel heavy. I travel light by leaving the wife at home.  >:D
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.

OK, so lets now sort the legality of pulling a trailer with a bike. Groenie I read the above thread and it was not clarified.

Explain to me your reference to a "dolly" where do you get that from.

Right, so let the clever okes, who have been so anxious to tell me its illegal to tow a trailer behind the bike, line up.

BTW I know the answer... I want to hear what the collective has to say.

To stimulate the debate, I'll start you off.

A trailer is a vehicle designed to be drawn behind another vehicle... it is NOT towed behind a vehicle

I would like to know the answer, purely for the sake of interest.
I assume it is legal, because Gerrard will not (I think) do anything illegal taking your professional career into consideration.

If it is however legal, one thing is sure as hell; you will get pulled over and delayed by traffic cops up North. That to me is enough inconvenience to not wanting to tow anything with a bike. Maybe the cops down South is not so 'active'

Don't assume too quickly :lol8: The jury is still out. I tried looking for the thread where an article by the AA was quoted. Maybe someone can help ?

Think it was on a "For Sale" of a single wheel trailer.

On AA site: According to Regulation 330 of the National Road Traffic Act, “No person shall operate a vehicle on a public road towing another vehicle: if the towing vehicle is a motorcycle, motor tricycle, motor quadrucycle or pedal cycle.” There does not appear to be any exemptions in the Act in this regard relating to the tare or the gross vehicle mass of a motorcycle, nor are there provisions for special permits. Therefore it is illegal under any circumstances to tow a trailer with a motorcycle.

I however checked regulation 330 of road traffic act and cannot find the quote above. Maybe amended since???

I fully agree, but I'm not 'towing' my trailer behind my bike. It is being 'drawn' as a trailer is designed to do. The mistake they are making is looking at the vehicles involved, instead of the act complained of.

If you say its illegal, draw up the chargesheet to bring me before court and I'll give you my plea.

I dont say it's illegal, copied from AA site, but always open to make a quick buck. How much can I expect for drawing up a charge sheet, R10k??  :imaposer:
