What about a side car?

The logic for the bolt on dolly is the same principle.

I dont say it's illegal, copied from AA site, but always open to make a quick buck. How much can I expect for drawing up a charge sheet, R10k??  :imaposer:

So far I can't find its illegal (and that's the criteria) and waiting for someone to convince me otherwise.

NOTE TO ALL : This is my opinion for using my trailer. You rely on it at your own peril and I take no responsibility for your decisions and actions

The logic for the bolt on dolly is the same principle.

Has its own requirements for certification on how the bolt-on is done, but I work on the same principles of a vehicle designed to be fixed to the bike and drawn by it, not towed.

Sorry G, maar jy is gefok. Regulasie 208 van pad verkeers wet het betrekking op hoe 'n side car vasgesit moet word. Ek copy:

Manner in which side-car to be attached to motor cycle

No person shall operate on a public road a motor cycle with side-car, unless such side-car is attached to the left side of the motor cycle in such a manner that the centre-line of the axle of the side-car is within the wheelbase of the motor cycle: Provided that no side-car shall be attached to a motor cycle having an engine with a cylinder capacity of less than 50 cubic centimetres.

Semantics. I reckon the act intended that motorcycles are not permitted to have a trailer attached to them.

Not something I see in za at all except now an again at a rally. As a previous poster pointed out why would someone do that? May as well use a cage.

Towing (or drawing) a trailer with a bike is illegal.  Exactly as illegal as exceeding the speed limit, riding without a number plate or license disk, meerkatting while riding, etc.   Why is this even a discussion?  :pot: :pot:

Same reason you do Ironman, something I consider non-sensical... because we can

Hehe, so I was safe as you could not ignore me as I had not posted! :laughing4:
It seems as it is like my argument the last few times I got pulled over by metro, my vito has removable seats and they accuse me off cutting them out and illegally using the vehicle for commercial purposes!
Make it, use it and confuse the hell out of the cop by giving him a huge talk about towing, drawing , side and rear mounted cars etc!
You are not in the talking business for nothing!
Above all, ENJOY!

Given we live in good ol' SA, that is the most sensible post so far. What I always say... don't let the law interfere with a good set of facts. :lol8:

Being stopped or pulled over and slapped with a fine is not the problem here. Having been in an accident, causing damage to some very expensive car or loss of life is, as then the legal / illegal argument will not be with a speedcop next to the road. You will know whether it is really worth it.

I do think the classification of a "vehicle" should be looked at at should definitely be amended to "motorised vehicle" or something similar.I found in the UK that you do not have to licence a Trailer or a Caravan ....they must just display the same numberplate as the towing vehicle.

The fact that we have to pay licence fees on trailers and caravans as of they are self-powered vehicles is just wrong....and if this can be resolved...then the towing issuecould also be addressed. ..

The law is all about semantics and interpretations, within reason...

I found an extract of some traffic law a long time ago that referred to a "dolly". As I can remember it has something to do with a dolly not being attached via a hitch, but actually bolted to the towing vehicle, thus becoming an extension of the vehicle. Technically speaking, your bike should then be registered as a 3-wheeled vehicle.... I have no idea what or where I found it. But you're in the law game Mr. G, I'm sure you'll find it
Don't look back, that's not where you're going.

:thumleft: I sorted the answer for myself, but to answer the OP's question... yes, its illegal for a bike to tow anything.

You take the same risk as when you drive any vehicle that is not 100% roadworthy!
Mine is or isn't as I have a loose connection somewhere that affects my left headlight dim!
Slick tyre, any defect and you are in trouble, if they pick it up!
