Koue Bokkeveld 400 Race Preview attracts 2020 Dakar hopefuls

KOUE BOKKEVELD POSTER 2019

PRESS RELEASE
Koue Bokkeveld 400 – Saturday, 4 May 2019
• Round 2 of the SA National Cross-Country Championship for Motorcycles & Quads
• Rounds 4 & 5 of the Western Cape Junior & Senior Regional Championship

OFF-ROAD BIKES TO TACKLE CHALLENGING KOUE BOKKEVELD IN PERSUIT OF TITLES

The Western Cape awaits competitors in the South African National Cross-Country Motorcycle and Quad Championship who will travel to the Koue Bokkeveld region where they will compete in the KB 400, the second round of the series that takes place on 4 May. With the first set of points on the scoreboard after the season opener in KwaZulu-Natal, the KB 400 will serve as the second chance to earn valuable points and no-one can afford to put a wheel wrong.

The KB 400 has a rich racing history with the organising club, the Western Cape Off-road Club, known for putting together an enjoyable event that showcases the stunning area with the local communities not only working hard to make a success of the event, but also enjoying spoiling the visitors. The KB 400 will also serve as the fourth and fifth rounds of the Western Cape Junior and Senior Regional Championship and after the national competitors have left to return to their destinations, junior and senior riders will enjoy another day of racing in the Koue Bokkeveld.

For the national section of the KB 400, the time-trial as well as the main race are scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 4th with the 40km time-trial that will determine the starting order for the second racing section. Competitors will have to complete documentation on Friday afternoon at the race venue and will take on the time-trial on Saturday morning between 8:00 and 8:30.

Strategy and planning will play a role in the way the title contenders take on the KB 400. They will have to post the best possible time on the time-trial so as to ensure a good starting position although they will have to be cautious as there is not too much time available to repair and prepare for the second racing section. The main race will start at about 10:30 after the riders briefing.

The second racing section will consist of two loops of which the one will be approximately 40 kilometres long while the other will be about 72 kilometres. There will be an unassisted refuel point on the longer of the two loops with the designated service and refuel point as well as the Start/Finish of the KB 400 and the race headquarters at Donkerbos. Competitors will complete the two loops in a prescribed order for a total of about 300 kilometres with the total race distance, including the time-trial, just under 350 kilometres.

The routes will take competitors on a variety of terrain including farm lands and orchards to rugged rock that litters the breathtaking landscape. Riders might even get the idea they are on the moon at certain places as the area will take them to the border of the Cederberg mountains.

Local racing enthusiasts and spectators can look forward to see South Africa’s Dakar Rally heroes, Ross Branch (Brother Leader Tread KTM) and Kenny Gilbert (Husqvarna) in action. Both have also recently completed the gruelling Afriquia Merzouga Rally in Marocco with Branch finishing second overall while Gilbert was ninth. Fierce competition can be expected in all the classes as the various title battles will continue in the Western Cape.

The two ladies who also participated in Marocco, Kirsten Landman (Brother Leader Tread KTM) and Taye Perry (Honda) will also be in action at the KB 400. Like Branch and Gilbert, both ladies have their eyes on competing in the 2020 Dakar Rally. Landman won her entry to compete in the Dakar Rally by winning the ladies category while Perry finished second.

Spectators are welcome to experience the action at the KB 400 during the weekend. To get to the race venue, take the R303 from Ceres in the direction of Prince Alfred Hamlet. The village Op die Berg is 45 kilometres from Ceres. Go past Op die Berg for 15 more kilometres to the race venue on the left at the Donkerbos turn-off. (GPS: S 32° 53’ 9.75”
E 19° 17’ 22.78”)

The entries for the KB 400 close on Friday, 26 April while late entries close on 28 April.
