The experts at Van Zyl's!

Pic 1: Kobus...beautiful stance! ;)

Pic 2: Hardy, with his "Kevlar" cap, at least according to Ian!
Now you know why I nicknamed Kobus “ Cool Kobus” never fazed by anything!
To Hardy it is just another time down a road! :laughing4: :peepwall:

I somewhat disagree with the sentiments mentioned earlier. Yes, we ride this route more than others do, but that does not mean I am not nervous, when I decent down VZP.
It is slippery, steep, and it it is very dangerous. I mentioned to someone on this trip that I am always even more excited about riding the Kaokoland than most guests. It is because I know what awaits.
Like in Quest - all the riders were willing to lend a hand, give a comforting word of advice, and cheer on each of the riders.
This place does that to you. None of these guys and girl will ever forget each other.
Chopperpilot, Straatkat, Hennie and Brian were the pioneers of the trail and they always rode in the front, which is why most pics were of the other riders.
As far as Kobus is concerned - I have yet to meet a guy who inspires trust as quickly as Kobus does. I have worked with him on a few projects now and hope that it will continue.
Always willing to lend a hand, do the dirty job and always have time for other people - a proper afrikaner boerseun. Thanks Kobus.

One of the highlights of the trip for me was getting to know Kobus- all round solid great guy.

Still Day 6: The bottom of Van Zyl's

From the pass we followed a rocky jeep track into the bottom of the valley. :thumleft:

Next to the dry river bed, we had a well deserved rest, with our bodies invigorated by ice cold Oros and water, handed to us by Chantal. ;)

Some of our group then took "victory" pics, before departing along the dry river bed down to the Marienflüss. ;)

Day 6: Marienfluss

We only traversed 18km of the southern part of the Marienfluss to the "Rooi Drom". ;)

This section consisted of a twisty sand jeep track. :o

Rooi Drom - Red Drum

We're still on Day 6. ;)

After following the dry river bed from the bottom of Van Zyl's, it was time for a break after negotiating the 18 km of twisty red sand jeep track through the southern part of the Marienfluss.

Pic 1: Riders bundling together under the little bit of shade at the " Rooi Drom" trees.

Pic 2:  Bertie and Ian exhausted. Besides the technical riding, it was hot too. At 39 degrees C, just shy of 40!

Pic 3: The terrain around the "Rooi Drom, a clear indication of the first section of the last 25km to Marble Camp. The total distance for the day, was only 70km, but did it keep us busy!

Departing "Rooi Drom"

Colourfull 44 gallon drums are place strategically in the Marienfluss and Hartman valleys, to serve as navigation aids. :thumleft:

We had all the tracks on our GPSs, so no reason to get lost!

We came across the red one at the southern tip of the Marienfluss, as well as a blue one in the Orupembe area. :thumleft:

Last 25km to Marble Camp

Our first encounter with one of the "Lost men of the Koakoland! :o

Thank you Hennie Roos! ;)

The artworks are made of rocks, which are welded together with steel cages. :thumleft:

They are apparently placed all over the Kaokoland, and even the Skeleton Coast.  :thumleft:

One is marked "27", but it is believed that only 9 have been found. A person claims to have found another 5.  :o

I'm aware of 3 that were found by our group. :thumleft:

Pic 1: A "Lost man of the Kaokoland".

Pic 2: Gordon: "I found it!"

Pic 3: Hennie and Bertie

Pic 4: Henk departing the site.

Pics to follow
