Yup, only advatage is that the 650 only weighs 145kg - not nearly as light as your 500's of course, but a damn side lighter than a Dakar I once had..... Still gives me nightmares.....

OK, enough waffle - more pics please!!

@ClimbingTurtle

The 500 must be the preferred bike for this trip. :thumleft:

It's however no use acquiring one solely to do this trip. Any mid-size bike such as the XRL, DR or XC is fine for this trip. ;)

A bit of fitness, some riding skills and a well prepped/serviced bike can be achieved by any rider, and will contribute immensely to your enjoyment of this trip. :thumleft:

Day 9.11: Khowarib to Twyfelfontein

We had one more break stop in the river section after the swimming fun, before exiting the Aba-Huab river at the Twyfelfontein pump station. ;)

The whole group was to meet at the Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, for some much needed R&R, after a hard but rewarding day's riding!

Day 9.12: Khowarib to Twyfelfontein

Our overnight accommodation was at the Twyfelfontein community campsite, but we first went to the stunning Twyfelfontein Country Lodge for some liquid refreshments and a comfy rest. The swimming pool was unfortunately being repaired..so no swimmimg. :'(

Awesome pub area upstairs, with a stunning view of the Twyfelfontein area. :thumleft:

I did not know about this campsite!!

When I was up there with the wife a couple of years back (4x4 trip) the Lodge was full so we back-tracked and camped at Huab River Community campsite - there was elephants the day before we got there.....

Day 9.14: Khowarib to Twyfelfontein

More pics at Twyfelfontein Country Lodge. ;)

Just to give an idea of the cost of liquid refreshments. Beers/ciders cost R35-00 each at most lodges. White Lady Lodge at Brandberg was the exception with around R 15-00 a beer. Regardless the cost, always a bargain!

Pic 1: Henk and Duncan, KTM friends!

Pic 2: Hennie Roos with Brian and Peter...foreplay?

Pic 3: View from the pub area! (Rock art on the boulders.)

Pic 4: Rock art. (Twyfelfontein is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.)

Pic 5: More rock art. (The numerous dots on the rock face might have been a calender.)

Day 9.15: Khowarib to Twyfelfontein

After the fun, rest and refreshments at the Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, we travelled the short distance to the Twyfelfontein Community Camp, in order to set-up camp before dark. ;)

The Specialised Adventures team prepared another delicious meal, while we had more drinks and fun. There is a bar at this campsite.

Some campsite pics:

Pic 1: Sunset at camp, pic by Duncan.

Pic 2: Fun, food and drinks around the " campfire", which was a few metres away due to cooking actions and a
           wind blowing.

Pic 3: A rise and shine pic. Big smiles, as Duncan is about to mount Bertie's steed for day 10!

Pic 4: Henk's "room"! (Thanks for the coffee Duncan!)

Pic 5: Bertie, forcing a smile. He had all my sympathy with his injury, and having to travel in the Cruiser.

How far was that from the Country Lodge?

Jurre - I would have to guess a bit under 50km - back up to the C39, iirc, and about half-way up the C39 towards C39/C43 intersection - we thought we might have to go all the way back to Palmwag (which we did the next day to get petrol, we didnt have enough left to get all the way down the Skeleton coast road) - I remember it was at the river bed you turned off, and a km or 2 off the road - was a great place, and we managed to get some cold beers!!

Day 10: Twyfelfontein to Brandberg, White Lady Lodge - 280km

Day 10, our 2nd last day of this magnificent trip through Koako- and Damaraland.

This day, with 280 km of mostly jeep track, following long stretches of dry river beds, will be high, if not at the top of highlights of this tour.  :thumleft:

Hardy was sceptical if we would be able to cover the whole distance, and reach camp at Brandberg before dark. :o

After a bit of pressure and obtaining the 2nd sat phone, myself, Hennie Roos, Brian "Sipho" Harmse and Brian Cackett set off at high speed on the first 7km gravel highway, before being slowed down by a rocky jeep track. ;D

Duncan's 690's cooling fan was not working, and Hardy negotiated with Bertie the use of his KTM 500, for this day. :o

Today's route would take us through the Doros and Messum crater areas, with breathtaking rock formations in the gorges!

We would turn as close as 30kms from the coast, clearly noticeable and visible, with a cool sea breeze and mist in the distance. :o

The back-up vehicle would stay with the 2nd group for this day, therefore the reason for us carrying the sat phone, for 2 hourly check ins with the ladies. ;)

We had to keep a reasonable pace to be able to complete the 280km, but we allowed for plenty photo and break stops to appreciate the stunning landscape. :thumleft:

Let's start with the pics:

I rode with Brian, and Duncan and Hennie a short distance behind us, in order to maintain a dust gap.

Our first stop, with Hennie and Duncan approaching.
