When I was a kid my dad had a Midnight Special - but his did not have any of the blingy gold bits - black and silver.

Man if I could get my hands on a bike like that I'll take it.

So if the bike in question is a Midnight Special and you dont take it let me know  ;)

On the 81 Buffalo rally the guys revved the hel out of bikes. There was a competition who could rev the longest. After 2 Katanas blown their motors the 1.1 owner shut the bike down. Lighted a cigarette on the exhaust a sat on the bike smoking it. My dad came back and bought a 1.1 immediately.

Dit lyk na dieselfde enjin, en die kraglewering voel soort van dieselfde.

I had a XS1100 with the 2nd gear issue. Could pull away in third two up without revving or stalling it no probs. We hoisted the bike up on standing on the backwheel, took off the sump cover and then bend the 2nd gear selector slightly back into place again. Never had the gearbox issue again. A lot of engine and bike and highly underrated back then. I am currently witnessing one being rebuilt from frame up back to original. I don't see that going for less than R40k, it is better rebuilt than what it was on the showroom  :drif:

I own my dad's original '78 (purchased new) XS Eleven, SAVVA dated and registered and entirely original... gem of a bike with a bullet proof motor :thumleft: Probably the only SAVVA dated and registered XS in the country... :lol8:

Watch these bikes come into their own in a few years time.... :thumleft:

Bought my first 1.1 in 1980 and had four of them up to the end of the nineties. As everyone has said--brilliant touring bike with it's torquey engine and shaft drive. I've ridden well over 100 000k's on them and never had a gearbox problem--incredibly reliable as were/are all Jap bikes. I think they stopped making them in '84 with the red and grey one, and then the FJ1100 took it's place. Sat on one recently and it amazed me at how low and manageable it was compared to the litre bikes of today. Just sold my Versys because it was getting too much to handle, mainly because of its height.  They don't seem to hold value like its peers have--CBX, GS/X and Kawa Z1300 etc. and not sure that will change imo. I'd pay 40k for one in good nick--with standard pipes. I hate those 80's Cowley pipes.

Maybe because the lazy Yammy redlined at 4000 and the Suzuki's could rev to 18000...

The XS 1100 Midnight Special was my wet dream. My wife used to have the XS400 Special. Lekker bike.
I had the Red version of the 11 Special. The only bike I have ever sold for more than I paid for it. Bought it in 2002 for 8k and sold it in 2007 for 15k.
Loved it, but it was a gas guzzler. Used more petrol than my old 2.3 Merc at the time
