Depending condition, between R15k and R25k.

Jip, max. They were never sought after bikes.
Some market their old bikes as "classics" or "collectors", whilst in all honesty, they are just old bikes.
and they handle like a fully laden wheelbarrow, had one never enjoyed it 😳

Rod Gray would disagree.

On the 81 Buffalo rally the guys revved the hel out of bikes. There was a competition who could rev the longest. After 2 Katanas blown their motors the 1.1 owner shut the bike down. Lighted a cigarette on the exhaust a sat on the bike smoking it. My dad came back and bought a 1.1 immediately.

must of been the thin air

My ZIR mkII had a kick starter under the seat as well. never needed it, even a push start was relatively easy.

the early models had a second gear problem, solved at the factory about 1981, lots of engineering places specialized fixing it, around joburg anyway.i was working at yamaha at the time, finished my apprenticeship in may `81 at cowan and johns, anybody remember them ? apart from the second gear issue they are great, i would love one now, i currently have a gs850 suzuki, 1979 model, same sort of bike. worst thing you could do to the bike was put a cowley exhaust on it, proven time and again they went slower with it. std pipes gutted out were the answer, rod grey and the guys at racing motors found that out, my then boss errol cowan also raced one, never won mind!. buy it and love it,i would.

Thanks Alphadog. I have wanted one since I was a lightie, so trying to be objective.
I will hopefully see it today and take it for a ride.
Should I just push it a bit in 2nd and see if it jumps out of gear? It has some sort of 4 in 1 on. Kerker I think. Will check.
Then come back here and discuss as I am still not sure if I should get it.
Looking at this from a cheap, ridable classic, or if not classic then maybe future classic perspective, it might make sense?
Or would that be a stupid reason to buy one?
I get pissed off with high maintenance bikes, I dont like working and spending on them.
