My Sidecar Project
« on: May 15, 2019, 12:13:31 pm »
I love sidecars (obviously… I started this board  ) And one of the reasons I bought the 1150 adv is to put a sidecar on it. For now Wify won't let me, and also its bleddie complicated fitting the subframe to these modern frameless bikes as a first try DIY eperient. I can get Humfree to do it, and though I accept his cost is reasonable, its inhibitive for now.

So, I'm first going to give it a go with something simpler  on another bike, and thinking of hacking the W650, but that would be sinful. I've already done a lot of research.

I'm not rushing (must first finish the trailer) just getting my ducks in a row.

First the bike. Anyone out there with a nice BMW R100 to swap for a W650 ?

And then I need a suitable tub, so if you have one lying around let me know.

JJR bought a secondhand sidecar on Gumtree and did the fitting onto his 1150 GSA himself.

Ag WTF ? The 1150 was bought as the sidecar bike, so I'm just going to do it. Done a lot of research and had my people talk to other people. Its not so complicated and Humfree has offered his guidance. Much appreciated. (also have Woody in my ear all the time. he is mos now an expert  :lol8: ) The sidecar community is an amazing bunch with help generously offered.

So I reckon, get the wheel, swingarm and suspension sorted. Get the dimensions for the tub and build the frame around it. I'm not re-inventing the wheel and using the Ural frame concept. It works. The subframe for the 1150 is after all not that complicated. It basically replaces the belly pan with some extra strengthening joints.

And google is you best friend.

First up then I'm using an 1150 rear wheel that I sourced from Backgatjaco, who has been very helpful and kind on the price.( For now this is very much a scratch, tight budget project)

Let the rest of the experts chime in. I intend to step by step document the build.  :thumleft:

She'll come around. At least she does not freak out anymore when I mention the word sidecar. I've been on the project actively for about two weeks now and she just listens.  :3some:   When its there she'll get in, or like Woody says, I'll have lots of space to pack my shit for trips.  :lol8:

This is the frame I'm copying and following this build on ADVrider  https://advrider.com/f/threads/the-albatross-1150gs-sidecar-build.1318549/

I've also downloaded a lot of info on specs for sidecar setup. And then I hope to get Humfree down for a looksee, before it all goes together (or, he has invited me to come visit his workshop to see how it goes together)

Ek sien jy stel dit as veiliger as twee wiele, hoe se die engelse.....nothing could be further from the truth  :ricky:
