1290 head shake
« on: May 22, 2019, 08:53:41 am »
I've  been trying to find out how to get rid of slight head shake around 60-80km/h. It happens when  roll off the throttle and let go of the bars. It's almost like i mini tank slapper.
I've been playing with suspension settings but no luck. My next step is tire pressures.

It also only happens when I'm alone on the bike. When the girlfriend is on it does not happen.

Any ideas?

What tyres are you running? I also have the 1290 but my head shake is more around 180km/h

I had that exact thing with the Pirelli MT90 front.  Went back to TKC80 and it went away completely.   It did seem worse when the steering head bearing was a little loose.  You can go past KTM and ask them to check the steering bearing tightness.

On the high speed thing, I found the 1290 to be a little more twitchy than the 1190, but it never gets out of hand.  This makes the steering sharper at low speeds but obviously makes it a bit more nervous at high speed.

Mine seemed to settle down as I put some mileage on the bike though....but maybe I just got used to it haha.  Gotta remember it's a big bike with a 21inch skinny front wheel on, not gonna handle like a superbike.

This was the 1190 on decel from 80/90ish   https://www.instagram.com/p/BKbAZEuj_iT/

Tightening head bearing helped, but it seemed the tyre was the actual cause.

Yeah, high speed  I have no issue, it tracks beautifully, but as soon as I get below 100km/h and let go of the bars it starts shaking, not violently, but if I leave it I feel it might progress to a full on tank slapper.

Got the same type of thing on 1190R.  Too many possibilities for cause. Simplest solution - Keep hands on bars...

Mine only started when I put a new Tyre. Worth a shot to put the old front on and see if it goes away.

who fitted the tyre? did they check the balance/truing (spokes)?

Turn out the back shock pre load all the way. then go back in 1 turn. It will be set on 5 turns in which is to hard. Sorted mine out. I weigh 80kgs

Thanks, I will try that. According to the manual the standard setting is 12 turns?

I'm tired of the head shake so I'm putting on a new set of Karoo 3 tires. Hopefully this will cure it.

Dang, thats not bad, even if they do burn away real quick.  I only really need a rear right now though.
