Let's just say these units were not the silver bullets I was hoping for...

At least I fixed the fuel warning light!

I bought this float switch from RS Components and fitted it in place of the thyristor. I did check that the materials are OK to be submerged in petrol.  :thumleft:

Neither open or closed circuit shows a warning, so I had to wire this resister into the circuit to give the correct current. I first had it on the float switch, but while testing it outside, I felt the resister getting hot and I don't like things heating up inside the fuel tank...  :o

So I just wired it into the connector wiring. I rode to the garage to fill it up and the fuel light works. Almost didn't make it there and back though. The stall issue is damn persistent...  :eek7:

Btw, at the end of this journey, I'll have so many spares, I could start a bike shop.

Some more feedback:

After loading a new map, the bike started and idled for a full 15 minutes. This is the first time that I've managed to reach the 15min mark on the supposed reset procedure.

I took the bike out for a spin and there was a definite improvement on the throttle response, no stalling or hesitation when opening up full throttle from low revs etc. I stopped at Jo's place for a minute and switched the bike off.

When leaving, the bike started fine, road all of 100m to the first stop and then she died completely. No dash, no lights, nothing. While fidgeting with the battery connections, the bike lit up for a brief moment and then went dark again.  :xxbah:

I took the battery out this morning and it held it's charge at 13.7V, so I'm suspecting another short or loose connection somewhere, probably likely to the multiple removal and re-fitment of the tank, battery, fuses etc. Or maybe the ignition.  :dontknow:

But I don't think this new cut-out is related to the previous issue, so I have a feeling that we're moving in the right direction. Or maybe it's just my optimism getting the best of me...  :lol8:

:thumleft:

Just read this entire thread; my 2c worth of a similiar issue.

On my then new 640, for many many weeks, on deceleration-slow down-braking, the bike would cut out.
Would start eventually, unless i killed the battery.
Ended up being a minutely exposed connector terminal on the rear tail light loom.
The combination of deceleration, brake light on would short the circuit and cold weld the exposed terminal (which had friction rubbed off the insulation) onto the frame.
If the cold weld was stuck, the short would prevent ignition. If by luck it broke free, hence didnt short, all ok and she would start.

Same make, very different year and model, but a silly assembly mistake that took ages to figure out!

Fixed!

I measured the voltage with the battery not connected...

And when connected...

So the battery is bust. I found another battery from a 1150RS (too big, but useful) to test and this is the result.

And she lives!

I mounted the 1150 battery on the seat and rode to TracMac this morning. No stalling or any other issues.

I bought and fitted a new battery and continued to CBD without any trouble. Two rides without single stall or anything even feeling like a near stall...

I'll be commuting to town and back for the remainder of the week to see if anything else comes up.

But if all goes well over the next two weeks, she'll be up for sale. PM me if you're interested.
