I did that in June last year.

At first I thought I had made a mistake, but now I'm loving it.  I came from a 2016 1190R which already had a lot of good updates over the previous 1190s: The stronger Akront rims, different rear suspension setup to avoid bottoming, better starter and various heat shields to save the balls.    So it wasn't a big jump for me, but from an earlier 1190 it will be a big improvement.

I feel like the 1290 is better though.  It gives up nothing offroad, and I seem to be riding much faster now than I was o the 1190, with little effort. It rewards precision more. I found I could chuck the 1190 around and it would work.  I can do that with the 1290, but if youactually concentrate and do things properly the suspension lets you know you're riding properly and it's smooth as anything.
It does feel like the front end is a little heavier than the 1190 was to me. But shifting your weight a little back makes that disappear totally.

Get the quick shifter. I wouldn't bother with the full travel pack though. It already has a mechanical slipper clutch (so I don't see the need for ASR or whatever) and the Hill Hold assist just annoyed me on test ride.

You might feel that it's handling is quite a bit sharper on tar, turn in is quicker etc, but that it's a bit more nervous at speed.  I felt that but am either completely used to it or the bike has settled down with some mileage.

I think it's just as good, of not a bit better offroad (due to suspension) and quite a lot better on tar. The electronics are really nice.

What I found.

Faster revving engine.
Smoother gear changes.
Less chain slap on swingarm.
Power only 10Hp up on paper, but feels WAY more when you ride the bike.
Lot of electronics extra that is awesome. Dash is amazing.

At first I also said nah, not trading my 1190, then after the 2nd test ride it changed my mind.

Do it, you wont regret it  :thumleft:

the 1290 engine is just so much better!

I had the 1190 and now the 1290, but the clearest comparison, is when I get an 1190 as a loan bike when I service my 1290 - also, after 2 years, I was used to the power on my 1190 - the 1290 still makes me smile 4 years later

I own a 2014 Ktm 1190r which I bought new in beginning 2015. On my first off road outing I got a big smiley but managed to make it to the destination with 0.9 bar left in the front. Had a heavy duty tube installed and have had several other smileys but no flats. The rims are the only big draw down I have with the 1190 as we do mainly dirt road riding with a little technical here and there. I have been were the 1090 has been and prefer the softer suspension. Last year I made the calculations to upgrade and at the time I think the 1290r was +- R220 000. My 1190 had 40000 kays on the clock and say that I would hopefully get maybeeeee R120 000. So that left me with a R100 000 difference and was that roughly the same price as a real off roader (plastic) brand new. I just could not justify making the move. I have a blast on my 1190tie. Can wheely it from pull away up to 4 gear without having to clutch it. If I feel that I want a bit more speed and power , I simply take a ride with my RC8R.....which is the original Dna for that 1190ties engine. :bootyshake: I love my 1190ties....both of them. :headbang:

P.S. If I did not have an adventure bike and I was looking to by into the KTM brand then I would buy the 1290r as I think it is an awesome bike.

After all decided rather to ignore the itch purely because of secondhand value of my 1190 and price of the 1290. My 1190 got all the extra's like rottweiler, Scott steering damper ect. With the 1290 I got to start over.

Realistic value on my 2013 1190 is between R100k to R120k.  It is sorted with all the mods I want on it, including upgraded suspension.  A 1290R would require an addition capital layout of at least another R100k.  Sure I can live with the 1190 for another year or two.

same here.

Plus I abuse my bikes, to abuse a 1290 will just be wrong, think I will have the 1190 for a few more years. In my case I see it as a R100k for the nice tablet. I also have upgraded suspension, changed sprockets for lower down power, so my motivation for swopping is low.

As mens oor rande en sente moes redeneer om bikes te regverdig, sou ons almal geloop het.

Dit bly duur, dit bly n kak belegging, en dit bly iets wat geld vreet elke liewe maand.

Both are orange, so they should just not stand next to each other, then she wont notice the swop!
