Erzberg 2019 - My thoughts
« on: June 03, 2019, 09:39:44 am »
What a crock of shit!!
If they want the race to be decided on a trials course, then why bother with the rest? I'm not taking any thing away from Graham Jarvis, because the man is a legend, however, I feel that the length of Carls Dinner was way to long and definitely qualified as a trials section.
I actually got quite bored with watching the race, since it just dragged on through the rocks.
I am super pissed at Wade being completely disadvantaged with a section that clearly favored trials riders

Thats the Erzberg Rodeo and thats what makes it unique and the toughest in the world! The trails riders obviously do have an advantage over an obstacle such as Carl`s Dinner but Hard Enduro riders such as Wade Young etc can and have beaten the likes of Jarvis before and will again!

I see Wades rear tyre collapsed half way through the race. I suspect that caused him to drop back from 3rd.

I thought it was pretty damn spectacular once again with a good mix of everything. Sure, Carls Dinner favoured Jarvis but he's 44 years old FFS, he gave them a lesson in skill and energy management, master class performance from the goat :thumleft: Not discounting that he cleaned just about everything else on that course where some of the others needed reruns.

I want to disagree,

Jarvis is in his element when it comes to trials type hard enduro, and he's fit, only thing counting against him now is age, at 44 its no joke competing at such a high standard.

Wade is more aggressive and probably faster on the flat/harescramble sections.

you can see a big difference between these two when they get to the tech/trails sections.

The only way to beat Jarvis is to wait for him to retire  ;) :imaposer:

Jarvis at his best - Young was good for podium, wasn't it for the tyre issue

Long enough, but unfortunately that has done nothing for my skill level.

Look. I have nothing against Erzberg and the monster that it is, and I am pretty sure that future winners would want to compete at the same intensity, but I still think that, that section favors a skill set outside of the enduro dissipline. Granted, the sport has evolved, and being competent in all fasets is a necessity, Carls in yesterday race, was over the top.

Well, that's my opinion

Yes and a 44yr old wouldn't, he learnt a lesson methinks.

Ertzberg is an extreme enduro, and sections like Hell's diner is at home there.

Tony Boa would find Hell's diner an absolute doddle on his trialsbike. It would really be a joke to him.

Sorry, of course it should be "Carl's diner".

I think that Karls is an institution at Erzberg, and it will always be there in some form or other. Personally I don't like the 'double back over yourself umpteen times over' in stupid little sections at the entrance to the real Dinner a few times. But in the main sections to watch Jarvis cruise there whilst all the others are largely stop/start is unbelievable. So smooth and effortless. So yes it should still stay in the race.
Wade is a different rider altogether. But he is fast with a capital F. Watching him catch Mani on that slippery off camber in the forest was crazy (and lil letti can ride that kinda stuff), and then to pass for the lead by skiing past him down the snow was ridiculous. It just shows you where his head is, he's driven.
Romaniacs to me is the big leveller.  Lagares, Erzberg, Hells Gate and a few others are typical European Extremes held in too small an area, so the organisers just throw together all the bullshit sections they can find (and a large proportion of man made ones), and make you double back on yourself the whole time. Romaniacs has got the space to make it real all round hard core skills (as does the Roof by the way).
Gutted for Blake, so close. But to me the ride of the day (after GJ) was Pol Torres. Came off the second row to finish.
