Some Charlie said the other day that the best ever D/S bike is the BMW GS310.

You do not pay attention. :ricky:

But then, a close 2nd, is the 690/701. >:D

Eish! I don't know about the 310!

But do yourself a favour and go testride the new 690. Something special!
Is there a big difference from the old 690?
[/exc500)

Mr Bean, I'm not qualified to answer your question. But the 2 big improvements imo are the the upgraded engine and  the new suspension!(same as on exc500) Yes big difference imo...

Apart from Apex vs XPlor, the Motard has dual discs and different claipers if I am not mistaken so no not a straight swop. But you can get motard wheel set for the enduro

Is there a big difference from the old 690?

well,  for a start the newer 690's are actually 690cc.
then there's the 2nd balancer shaft.
the rider aids (electronics),
bigger tank.

The 690's from 2012 are all actually 690cc  :deal:

Nope single disc, just bigger diameter, 320mm vs 300mm. Rear disc on both is 240mm.

looks just like my bike,  except mine doesn't have ridiculous 18/21 wheels.
17/17 baby!

You have a skateboard?? :thumleft:

Dan, is die verskil in die 2 modelled(Enduro en Smc) slegs in die wiele? Kan mens dus die een verander na die ander?

Motard het minder suspension travel, aldus agente.

Only in the front, Motard is 215mm vs 250mm rear are both 250mm.

Yes the new '19 now uses the 701 improved engine (balancers and head redesign, more power, the 701 frame and larger fuel tank, quickshifter and idiot rider assist tech.

It is White - the new orange. Capische.

PS Oh and still better suspension - they both now have WP Xplor forks and PDS but the KTM only has 250mm travel and the 701 has 275mm. Not sure what this shortass thing is with KTM these days?   ???

So the new 690 is the 701.
Then what is the 701?

Motor-wise yes, but the new 690 has more electronics.
My hunch is the 690's now a bit better than the 701 but the looks of the latter I like more.

And the SM won't be an Enduro by slapping on some wheels!
Indeed the frame's a tad different but also the suspension, not the same at all.
Hey, there's a reason they sell 2 of 'em, they both have their own purpose.

Add my vote to the "690 is the best adventure bike on the planet".

We've just returned from 3 back to back Kaokoland tours and I can't think of anything else that comes close.

On the long open tracks it's not the most comfy thing on the planet and on the rougher bits like 'Robbies Pass' you need to mindful of all the torque but it handles both with ease and does the in-between stuff like no other bike.

Incedently we added Robbies Pass for the first time this year to our tour route and I was worried by all the talk of how tough it would be if you weren't on a 500/501 type bike. The 690's/701 cruised up the pass on a day we did 300km to finish at Kunene River Lodge. Only 1 of the 7 riders took some strain but considering he was suffering from a heavy bronchial infection and the temperature was mid 30's I wasn't surprised. The bikes cruised up.

What is the max. all day cruising speed on tar with the 701's?

We took the tar road back from the EC bash to make up time and cruised most of the way at about 125-130 on the 690.
I have the small screen on which helps a bit, but thats about the speed one can cruise before it becomes tiring from the wind.

I would imagine the setup like Big Dom has will be a lot more comfortable at cruising speed
