So, this was fun. We decided to answer an important question:

Can the stalwart KTM 990 Adventure riders at last trade in their bikes? Is the KTM 790 Adventure the new dirt supremo?

After a day of jumping, railing, sliding, dragging and dropping both, we think we know:

Whether yes or no, nothing yet beats the 990 for that distinctive look imo.... :thumleft:

If I may ask, whose bike is the 990R? Because that look exactly like my old 990.
Trust that little voice in your head that says 'Wouldn't it be interesting if...'; And then do it.

Not many bikes sounds as good as a 990 with decent pipes

Taken from the floor at Fire Up according to the article.

Guy who bought it from you probably traded it in there.

I believe the only reason the 790 out-dragged the 990 is weight, or lack of it.

There is a 20kg difference between them, and this is why the 790 is off quicker.

True. But the difference in weight between Harry and I is at least 20kg.

You have a fantastic grasp of the english language and really enjoy your articles Don.  I have a 950 and fall in love with the thing every time it fires up, the twin akros make my knees weak.

Thanks for the read!

Great read, thanks. As an old 990 S owner, my bike now appears to be so out of touch and not very dissimilar to a dinosaur  :( I do however still love the blue and orange T Rex a lot ......don't know for how long still though  :-\

I have an old 990S and when I hit the hammer it fucks off plain & simple but having said that I wish I could have a 790 as well. Having only read about the 790 the stand out for me is the lower cost to production for the motor and compromised ground clearance. Pity they did not shell out for a smaller power plant in a 790 V-Twin. It would have genetic appeal as well as being able to scale up & down without losing soul

Well it took KTM 16 years to come up with something that can compete against the 950/990.

Not in the looks department though..

Llel Pavey did give a few ‘subtle’ clues in his T7 review. The outcome much like this article wasn’t too much of a surprise. Given my standard 790 however and a T7 parked next to it, I would have knobblies on the yami

I wonder if simply fitting a white front fender on the 790 would not clean up the looks a bit

You lost me at Harry not being able to pick up the 990 ...................... he does look sickly, though.

However, you redeemed yourselves with the your final comments .........................  :thumleft:
