Objective comparison

Indeed it is!
I've never really liked the katoom v-twins for offroad use, helped by considering them being too big/powerful/heavy as well.
But their past and still current legacy of course has & had some attractive points, the long distance slabbing possible being only one of them and important for me.
So when the 790 Adv was announced about a year after the 790 Duke was released this was "it" for me: small enough, light enough and power enough, AND it was a katoom which I by then didn't know really ...... so I put my money down for one!
The result was I got the first R that KTM Centurion received, last April.

Now is hindsight a perfect science, hence I've concluded that I was just lucky that this bike turned out the be the cracker it is!
Yes, it's not really a looker, but the quirky thing has grown on me quite a bit actually.
The 790 proves you don't need 1000cc or more for doing everything on & off, and I think Average Joe (my real name) is quickest on it in the off as well due to its surprising handling!

I foresee Honda making a smaller AT when the dust has settled on their new 1100, it is simply too big and has now headed into boxer GS territory, pricewise too btw.

Quite an acheivement!
The test that Noneking posted is great, detailed and objective, there is of course the small matter of maintenance and repairs comparison that wasn’t mentioned........... I can fix 90% of the issues that my 990 may have out in the field, it has a self diagnoses FI light that flashes a fault code. I can also do all my own maintenance on my 2 990’s and have been doing so for the past 8 years. The 790 is not that easy, it needs the KTM diagnostic equipment to diagnose, fix and reset. Quite difficult when you break down in remote places.
I also believe the older 990S and the 2009 & 2010 990R to be superior to the 2012 990R they used as a comparison.

That said, KTM is moving in the right direction with the 790, and I believe it will be replaced by a more powerful 890 that will weigh 4kg less with more power.
