Since fitting the new Spark exhaust system to a customers bike, it became obvious that the centre stand will be rubbing on the underside of the collector box. The reason this is happening is due to the fact that he shortened the centre stand to make it easier to pop the bike on the center stand.
On the G/S models changing the length of the centre stand is a real bad idea as the stand length is such that it allows one of the leg tubes to rest against the lower frame rube connector just below the swing-arm. This provides a stop for the stand without which it is bound to rub against the bottom of the exhaust system collector box.
The shortening of the main stand also made the stand catch on the collector box which needed some serious modification. After fitting the brand new exhaust system this option was not so attractive anymore coupled with the fact that the stand will rest directly against the exhaust brought up the idea to modify the entire stand.
The idea is to add stoppers that are adjustable and closer to the pivot point of the stand, to keep the shorter length of the stand(The G/S stands are exceptionally tall and this height was a natural result of making the stand stop against the main frame.) and to make the stand easier to operate.
I have found the HPN modified stands to be very effective and decided to follow their recipe, but being very long in comparison (nearly 80mm taller) I wasn't sure if it will actually work.
The only what to find out was to fabricate it and see how it works.
Here follows the process getting to the end result;
In the image the two areas where sections of the collector box were cut away to make space for the stand is quite obvious;
