1200GS ABS pump kaput
« on: July 11, 2019, 11:01:30 am »
So my ABS pump decided it had enough and apparently kicked the bucket (sy laaste asem uitgeblaas).  Started looking around on the www for a replacement unit.  I can't believe the price being asked for this unit.

I decided to have the ABS disconnected.  I'm waiting for the quote from Jandre.  Anybody done this and how did it affect your experience on the bike?

I had one bike with ABS which was a R1100GS. All my other bikes in my life had no ABS and can't say it has ever affected me in any way. I suppose you can argue in an emergency the ABS will kick in sooner and it merely helps with the wheels not locking up so this raise many questions of how useful it is on gravel/wet roads etc. if you really have to stop right now regardless of a skid instead of just ploughing into something a bit slower?

How many individuals actually epxerienced the ABS kciking in and how many times in your riding life? Just my opinion it is supposedly good for what it was designed for but the percentage benefit to a bike it makes it better I have never been convinced of.

I decided to have the ABS disconnected.

I'm sure this can be done on a GS-boxer.
Mind you though, the telelever-front does not dive, robbing the rider from crucial feedback as to how hard he brakes, and this just is more dangerous (in my opinion way more!) than on a bike with normal forks.

I'm praying my pump will last forever........

The way I understand it, if this pump goes, your servo assisted brakes are non-functional as well.

BMW told me the other day they just bypass it, because a new one is like R25k.

The models from 07/08 onwards have serviceable parts, the previous models are sealed units, hence no serviceable items.

That's how it was explained to me/I understood it when I enquired.

Thanks Jughead.  I will wait for the quote and then make a call.  It sounds as if the servo assist will also not function any more.

BMW told me the other day they just bypass it, because a new one is like R25k  Yip.  £1,225.01 on e-bay.   :o

It might actually be a very small problem to fix :deal:

I can't speak for the 1200, but many 1150 owners disconnected theirs, took it out and installed an air compressor in the space where it was  :thumleft:

I took my pump out of my 1150.
Then GAVE it to a friend who needed it for his 1200.
Should be lots around, maybe ask on the 1150 whatsapp group or www.gsforum.co.za

Great job.

ABS kom net in spel as jy so hard rem dat die wiel stilstaan.

Ek sal nogal ongemaklik voel sonder ABS op my bike.

I feel the same about just removing ABS.
I dont think the failures have anything to do with mileage, I think its maintenance related. If the brake fluid isnt refreshed , you have a much
higher chance of failure, and the ABS needs to be bled in 4 places. Maybe the BMW pumps are also overly complicated. The problem was
much more evident on the servo equipped models (2003 and later 1150's, and early 1200's), but I haven't heard of many failures post 2008.
I do mine every 2 years, and am currently on 175000 km's, with servo ABS still intact.
Removing a safety device on a motorbike just doesnt sound right to me, although having said that, the thought of losing brakes
due to a failure at the wrong time also doesnt appeal to me.

:imaposer:
