...unsure if rare OR collectible... :)  It's OLDISH, to be sure...

But I do think the actual STORY behind it: Yamaha / Honda / Suzuki and Kawa ALL having water-cooled four cylinder motors back in the early 80's...

...and BMW having nothing other than the boxer motor, was the genesis behind the original K100,

(and the later K75 - interesting enough, the K75 (3-cylinder) is one of the ONLY BMW bikes where a smaller 'derivative of' was launched AFTER it's K100 big brother, usually it was the OTHER way around, with each new model increasing in cc from the previous model...!)

Fun project, gets out around once per year for D.G.R. (distinguished gentleman's ride).

I did motorcycle courier work in the 80's, and the K100 had just come out.

Myself and a colleague, Schalk Vorster, rode one up to Bloem for a client or the dealer, cannot remember.

we did this for Don Fullard, the then BMW agent in Bellville.

It went very well.

OK it's just me I suppose, but I can't see the machines of the '70's/80's as 'old'.

Rare and collectable sure, some of them, but to me they're too modern to be old.

Just like me.  ;)

MZ I think and the kick start was concentric to the gear change?

Some Jawa models had a single lever which did double duty. The internal mechanism enabled it to be disengaged from the gear shifter, and rotated upright to become the kick starter.

And my Bultaco if I remember had a left footed kickstart.

My first bike was a BMW R69S and that had a kickstart that came out sideways on the left, so you could stand next to the bike and kick start it. It would start on the first kick and then I would watch it rock slowly side to side as it idled very low, had that bike tuned just right. That was in 1982. That bike nearly killed me in 1986!
