990 - WWYD
« on: July 18, 2019, 11:43:53 pm »
What would you do? I bought an R off the forum less than a year ago, slips indicate that I'm R42k and 3 months down, my adrenaline releases from the surgeon on Monday and I can't wait to twist its ear. I love the torque of the bike but I battle with its weight in the bossies, I'm used to 'plastics'. 701 doesn't do it for me sexy wise and 790 is kinda out of my reach, T7 is sold on me I reckon but the wait...? I'm about R140k into the 990 prepping it for an overland trip, seeing the prices here scares me, I need to get roughly R110k, doable? Should I just stick with the old girl?

A bit rough to flog a bike just for a spesific trip, unless you generally struggle to come to grips with the R.One ten is not out of line if it's a really well kept bike. The current marketing rate seems to be between 90 and 100k.

If you are to short then you are to short nothing you can done about that.

Everything else can be addressed or a solution found.

I had 1 or 2 things I did not like on my 990. I have addressed all of them and now the bike is the way I want it  :ricky:

I'll suggest to keep at it.

Weight and height wise, the 950S is not for me, I also fight with it in the bossies. I've learned to ride around the height issue, which is quite easy and I've also decided to keep it out the bossies.  Sure, I'll do the off-road trips and some tech but I'm not going looking for it anymore with a big bike.

As for selling it, that's a personal choice. I'd like a 690 but can't do long trips on that. I also can't afford a new bike. And at the moment I'd only sell my 950 coz I need the money. Other than that, it stays where it is. It's a bike ready for anything, still more capable than me.

And, to be honest, if I was planning an overland trip, as in riding to Europe, I'd take no other bike.
Don't let fear hold you back ..... take it with you!

Who you wanna look sexy for in the bossies?? :eek7: :pot:

Personally I find big adventure bikes very limiting, and they in fact slowly get you into non-adventure mode. I have seen this with many people, evading areas with sand, bossies and rock.

The T7 will be a slightly lighter bike, but compared to 690/701 you'll still be carrying a permanent pillion in weight.

Let me just understand this correctly. After buying the KTM 990 R you spent a further 42K in 3 months on the bike? How is that possible?

My story.
Had a 950 2003 model. Luv the bike to bits. At 45k km I sold it. Bought a new 990 S 2006 model. Hated that bike. Sold it @ 9000km. That owner still have the bike. Loves it.
Bought a 2005 950 adv again. Still have it. Love it to bits. Will never sell her.Did a trip with 500s the other day. They could not believe where I ride the bike.
My point is if height is a problem like for me on the S ride a non R and feel the difference. There will be someone that will change the suspension and side stand for yours.
I know the new bikes are better. But its not always about what you ride. Its more how it make you feel.

This is where a 3 or 5 bike garage come into play.

You can pick up a very neat CRF450X for about R30 - R35k.. go tour, adventure and travel on the 990 and then come play in the dunes and trails on the 450

I tried doing both on my Transalp and all I actually achieved was destroying the bike.

Done and dusted.

Exactly what I would do if I was back in SA.

If more people understood this simple concept, the world would be a better place and much less full of GS's.... ;) :lol8:
