Cape Town to Europe Travel Insurance
« on: July 20, 2019, 11:15:40 am »
Hey fellow Wild Dogs,

My partner and I are riding up the East coast of Africa from Cape Town in Jan 2020.

The countries we're riding through include:

- South Africa
- Namibia
- Botswana
- Zimbabwe
- Malawi
- Mozambique
- Tanzania
- Kenya
- Sudan
- Ethiopia
- Egypt

We'll be shipping the bikes back home from Egypt, then flying over to Europe where we'll be travelling via public transport.

Finally, the plan is to volunteer on a yacht as crew to sail back from Europe to Cape Town.

We estimate the entire trip to take about 8 months and we'll both be 29 years old on departure.

I have been scouring the internet trying to find comprehensive health insurance that will cover us for 'dangerous' activities such as riding motorbikes, rock climbing, hiking, etc. not to mention cover us for going through African countries.

I found World Nomads (https://www.worldnomads.com/row/) travel insurance but the quote they gave me was quite pricey at 22 000 ZAR.

Can anyone recommend any other options?

Thank you!

I will follow the subject and your trip.

I plan to do the same but end of 2021.

I will join the next meeting of Horizon Unlimited this year to find info and tips.
Bonne route

Eric

Make sure also your medical cover includes evacuation back to south africa. I live in Tanzania I am on Discovery with a plan that offers "Africa benefit" . Hospitals and doctors in this area is ok for basic stuff and malaria, but advance help evacuation would be best.

Some travel insurance products exclude travelling by motorcycle. Make sure of this before you pay............

AFAIK, all the economic ones do exclude travelling by motorcycle.
You need to get specific cover added - at a cost.
I had to take the risk for a one day ride in Australia some 15 years ago.
The cost would have increased terrifically for the motorcycle cover.

Travel Insurance Consultants do cover motorcycle travel. The cost does increase slightly if you're riding a bike over 250cc but still works out to be slightly cheaper than Discovery back home  :) TIC quoted me around R19 000 for both my partner and I for the 8 month period. We won't be choosing them however due to them not covering rock climbing. World Nomads' quote increased significantly to cover climbing - around R34 000.

The search continues... will keep you guys updated!

You can check out TIC's various policies here if you're interested:

Reviving this zombie.

I have a holiday booked in May. With Trump locking down 'Merica and who knows what to come, I think it might be prudent to get some additional travel insurance. There are some other threads about this, but they are all aimed at the medical costs. I have that. Between the basic insurance on my credit card and Discovery, that is sorted.

What I am looking for is the travel insurance that covers you if your bag gets lost, or if your flights get cancelled or if your destination country is unexpectedly covered in lava. Any ideas?
Freedom is directly proportional to risk.

Hey Supervan!

We landed up getting up to the border of Ethiopia but had to come back to SA for lockdown. We were covered by Discovery for the trip and didn't need extra insurance.

The travel insurance provider we were going to select was SafetyWing, see their site here:

https://safetywing.com/nomad-insurance

I think they also cover bag losses, cancelled flights, etc. Perhaps their policy would have changed due to COVID so check it out. Their consultants are super helpful and will provide you with all the info you need  :thumleft:

Hey @LukasB9

We left the bikes at a friend's place in Nairobi and flew back to Cape Town a day before the lockdown. It was quite an epic getting back to say the least. You're welcome to check out the blog we set up for the trip where all the stories are documented: africansoutthere.com

Unfortunately my partner and I split up a few months ago so we will be completing the trip to Cairo separately. The plan now (for me at least), is to work and save enough cash for the remainder of the trip. I'm thinking of heading over in October 2021, hopefully this COVID drama will have subsided by then  :thumleft:

@nicoleb I like how the Suzuki needed very little prep, seems like a great bike for the trip, thanks for the link, having a look at the trip now! I'm sure the second part of the trip will be great as soon as the circumstances allow. Hooked on the blog already.
