Maintenance Plan for Old'ish models?

Howzit guys!

I'm wondering if there is a product that almost serves as an insurance policy for major breakdowns/repairs on older bikes?

For example, I have a 2004 1200GS, I did the FD recently, so wondering if there might be something out there that can kick in should something happen to the motor, gearbox, shaft, ABS pump, stuff like that?

Probably not, but just thought I'd ask the all knowing community.

Those that I am aware off excludes vehicles older than 10 years.

Open a 6.5% interest bearing savings account at Capitec, and your mechanical insurance premiums can go in there. :ricky:

Just be careful of the Motorite type plans and read the fine print VERY carefully.

Most of these plans cover only faults and not subsequent damage.  For example, your radiator springs a leak.  Coolant runs out and the motor overheats and seizes. 

Motorite type plan will pay (in part) for a new (or the repair to) the radiator, but not for the subsequent damage, ie. full motor rebuild.

Then you have things like final drive bearing failure.  They will always ask for the cause of the damage.  If you cannot provide a definite answer to that question, they will assume wear and tear.  Then it's "Sorry, no claim"

Good, in fact very good advice!

I learned a lesson the hard way with a gearbox that packed up years ago.  Only the 5th gear.  Car was perfect, except that if you ut it in 5th, it was like selecting neutral. Took the car to the gearbox specialist prescribed by the insurer.  They took it out and stripped it.  Insurer decided, normal wear and tear, no pay.  Repairer wanted R4k back then to repair, or R800 to put it back together and refit to car.  Me, fękked us I didn't have money for either.

Now, whenever I am offered such a warranty, I always asks if it excluded wear and tear.  The answer is usually a very long winded response meaning no.  I then ask, what could possibly break on a car with 100 000km that can not be attributed to normal wear and tear.

Mutch better than the so called plans... at least you manage the funds yourself and approve wear and tear... :thumleft: :biggrin:

That is exactly the reason for me asking.
My bike is now on 104 000km, so these things are bound to happen, some of it, so it's just easier making provision than having to wake up one day and need to cough R10k or R25k or whatever the case might be.

The FD already greeted on about 101 000km, which is it's expected lifespan, but still not a nice unexpected R7k expense.

En die positiewe deel is as jy nie die geld hoef te gebruik vir onderhoud nie dan het jy klaar so paar sente extra wat as deposito vir volgende bike kan gaan... maar daai is net in die perfekte wereld waarin ons ongelukkig nie leef nie  :pot:
