as a commuter, the older Honda NC700, and the newer/replacement NC750, would be hard to beat; frugal on fuel, GREAT storage space, solid motor, etc.
(750 model rev limit is 1000 r.p.m. higher than older 700cc model, which makes riding this 'car-engine-characteristic' bike easier than the older 700cc, but both are solid.
...and the BMW 650 TWIN makes a great commuter, and since it is now 'discontinued', in favour of the 700GS, and then lately the 750 GS replacement, it can be had for not a lot of money, and will run and run, and run!
(under-stressed motor (800cc mechanically and electrically de-tuned to 650cc), tubeless tyres, 19 inch front wheel for better ROAD handling, etc etc. Well capable of good gravel roads, etc, when a bash plate is fitted. Parts readily available, and new spares often surprisingly affordable (given the propeller brand image).
And yes, scooters ARE underrated, got a customer - Alan, who when faced with any shortish trip, reaches not for the 1200 GS, but his scooter!
Cheers
