Karoo 3 vs TKC 80
« on: August 22, 2019, 06:31:25 pm »
I see the karoo 3 are stock tyres on a lot of new adventure bikes, have anyone compared them to the TKC 80 on a new 790, 1290 or 1250 GS?

I would rather ride on a im than a Karoo 3.

There must be a reason why they are fitted as stock............

rather ride on rim? why?

Have never heard bad things of the karoo. They give very good traction offroad and can handle high speeds on road. At the cost of giving low mileage. (Some guys at a different skill level of us love them and have shown the proof is in the pudding)

the TKC is the save classic knoblly for adventure bikes, but there has been some bad badges out there making bubbles so I wont choose one above the karoo.

I haven't compared them yet, but think if push comes to shove I would buy the cheaper of the 2. Both would be good enough.

Have a TKC front now which I inherited, looking forward to testing it.

The scorpion rally is pretty old. 3 or 4 years at least.

The STR is the new, more streetable version of the Scorpion Rally

Totally agree.
The rear is ok but the front is very very lively in sand.
Perhaps I am too critical,  for normal gravel it should probably be fine, but personally I think there are a lot of better options out there.

Winning combination for myself:  TKC80 front and Mitas EO7+ rear

I've just fitted Anakee Wilds to the AT.  I've done less than 300KM on them and all on tar so can't give any comment on handling off-road.  What I did notice is headshake developing at 150km/h which I wasn't expecting.  Slow down and it's gone.  I've heard that lowering pressure might help with that?

I like the "look" of the TKC80, so fitted them to me previous bike. On tar the bike felt like it had no grip, now I know it's a off road tyre, but in order to get to the place where you go off road you have to travel on tar. The other thing is mileage. The TKC80 won't last long.

Just my personal observations. I still like the tyre.

So according to this test,

TKC 80 - KTM 790 and KTM 1090
Scorpion Rally - KTM 1290
Karoo 3 - BMW 1250

I have a TKC on the front of the 1290 and it's been great.  Sure, the rears wear quickly, but the front is good for me.  I've done silly things on tar when I've forgotten that I'm using knobblies, and it's never really gotten out of shape too much.

TKC80 front Motoz Tractionator ADV rear works really well for me. Just gotta try to be nice to the rear tyre.

A Karoo 3 rear on a R1200GSA got a puncture on the first bit of gravel we hit other side of Worcester the other day. It turned out to be a very small rock with not that a sharp edge. The road was really not bad at all - it was a well kept gravel road for grape farmers.
Karoo 3 is off my list
BoosterPlug, LED Spots, Tool Tubes, RustStop, Kappa Screens, Top boxes, Tank Bags, ATG Gear - whatever works for me.
