701 &690 oil usage (or not?)

I am old school and do not accept any "burning of oil" on any of my vehicles.

A mate of my son recently took ownership of a brand new 690.
It uses oil, a lot actually. The dealer (and book) say it can use up to xyx L/km.
Is this true that the all 690&701's uses oil as standard?

I need to re-look my "fleet" in the near future and a 701 was definitely an option.
but, an engine should not use oil in my view. If oil is burnt, some residue will stay in the oil, fowling your system etc. etc.
Anyone who owns one  - please comment?

That's total BS, they only put that clause in to cover their own asses. My 690 hasn't used a drop of oil yet and it's on 20 000km. My 660Z Tenere used a lot and needed a motor rebuild after 3 500km's. That was thanks to the faulty air boxes on the first editions  :o I can almost guarantee you that his 690 is sucking in dust through those pathetic airboxes on the 690. I replaced mine with a Rally Raid filter as soon as I could  :thumleft:

Any engine whilst running uses oil - any!
In some engines this is hardly if at all noticeable due to the shape of the casings there where the dipstick sits (wide hence large in volume hence very small height difference), but in others this is quickly noticeable.
I would not worry, and the manufacturer knows best.
Oh, yeah, don't rev the tits off when cold, stupid in many ways, but otherwise hammer the bugger.
The 690/701 engine is a rather large single, and it revs high too so the piston-skirt is short... so it will slap, unavoidable.
That is when even a 100% engine (no wear, in spec etc) will 'use' oil, read loosing a bit to the combustion chamber.
No problem...

Oh, my 701 doesn't use a lot I think.
Think yeah, because as you are anal about consumed volume I'm anal in topping it up, but not about keeping track of the total added.
Hey, if I need to carry a 5L tin on the back then yes, I'll do some homework, but otherwise not  ;)

I never had to top up any oil between service levels on any of my previous bikes over the last 30 years. (XR500, DR600, Dakar 650, 1200GS AC, 2 off HP2,s.
Not a single drop top up.
Yes, even a good engine will "burn minute" drops of oil, but not a liter between services - even if you ride it hard.!
In my opinion the "acceptable levels of oil usage, given in any manual, is a figure that if your usage surpass this, your engine is due for rebuilt, and is not a "standard! - (The OEM will not tell you this --again my opinion ..)

Same, only time I noticed a ever so slight drop in the oil level was when I hit a long tar stretch home and kept it open full taps for longish periods

Past weekend I had a strange experience on my 701. After 400km ride. Checked the oil in the sight glass with bike upright. No visible oil level. Concerned parked the bike upright a waited for several hours. No oil level unless tipping the bike towards me. Then very low in the glass.
Concerned borrowed oil. It took less than 50mils and was above the centre line.
The question where was the oil hiding?
Rode back home 400km and no sign of drop in level.
Bike on 17 000km.

Yes virtually two egg cup amounts.

Strange (I asked as some people get units wrong), on some bikes oil can "hang up" in oil coolers etc, but don't know on the 690?  :thumleft:

All my previous ktm's only used a bit of oil on long multi-day trips. Fully loaded headwind exct exct. Only needed one top-up of 50ml per trip. More than 50ml per 1000km is where I draw the line, regardless of the manufacturers BS.

correct.
excellent bike.   never needed an oil change.   always had new oil in it.

correct.
excellent bike.   never needed an oil change.   always had new oil in it.
You bought one of the oval piston models, only other bike that cool was the NR750.

As mentioned above, the 701 should not use a lot of oil. I topped up mine with 100mL of oil after 8000km. That was due to my own stupidity though. I changed the clutch slave oring (common oem failure) and did not tighten the slave bolts enough upon re installation. So it pushed around 100mL oil past the gasket into the bash plate on first startup. Before this incident, the oil level on the sight glass dropped with half a cm in 8000km.

Halve it, 7500km's, you'll thank yourself!  :thumleft:

Quite frankly I'll not even do 5000km with the oil but that's just me.

Agreed, I planned to change oil at around 7500km. (Un)fortunately the slave went just before that. I will stick to the 5000km intervals from now on  :thumleft:

My 690 in the duke never used a drop, even with long distance high speed (relative for the 690) touring including one day rides to Nieu Bethseda which was around 900kms at above high way speed limits.  :3some:
