Honda CRF450L and The Tankwa Cross Country Rally
« on: August 28, 2019, 09:32:07 pm »
The Honda CRF450L started life like most new bikes on this forum. First with excitement and anticipation. Then with some analysis and finally 61 pages later mostly criticism.

But who's really ridden one, and in what conditions and for how long, and is HP really everything?

Is it an enduro bike or a small capacity Adventure bike. A Jack of all trades? Where does it fit in and is it as bad as the press made it out to be?

Well with all these questions in mind Honda as a brand once again stepped up to the plate and said - let's try to answer these questions and so they agreed to take the bike and expose it to the more extreme side of riding by entering three CRF450L's into the Tankwa Cross Country Rally. The premier Rally event in the Western Cape.

This trhead is about the bikes, the brand, the Tankwa Cross Country Rally and 3 ordinary guys living the Honda credo - The Power of Dreams!!

As most of you on here would know,Honda is a brand who puts its money where it’s mouth is.

They have done it with Quest and once again they have taken the risk and committed to putting their products through the ultimate test.

Reading up on the History of Honda, racing has always been a part of their DNA. Not only to win but to compete and to finish with a spirit of camaraderie.

Despite all the negative press Honda is saying - let’s take these machines with their limited HP and see what they can do.

And herewith the story starts.........

THE BIKES:

So we all know what's been said about the bike. If not, then you can read it here - http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=224637.0

Basically it came down to too little HP and being too expensive.

I have been lucky enough to take the bike on a few rides. From tar to gravel, to rocks to Atlantis and although it might need a little more punch it did everything asked of it and more.

Rallies are about so much more than HP and speed. Just look at the Dakar. The fastest guys don't always finish. It is about navigation and consistency and managing both man and machine.

For the reasons above we decided to take 3 stock bikes, even though we had the opportunity to have the higher output bikes.

The Tankwa Rally will be setting the bar even higher this year in terms of routes and a perfect challenge to test all of the above.

The only changes to be made to the bikes will be tyres with mousses front and rear, navigation towers and a few race numbers. But more on that later

Awesomeness, I take my hat off to Honda for taking this approach, kudos to them  :thumleft: I love the fact that they have chosen 3 normal bike enthusiast to do this and they didn't go searching for riding gods to prove a massive point. These bikes are about the weekend warriors and as such you guys are the perfect target market  : :thumleft: Besides, Taye will be there to dish out a hiding at the sharp end of the field  ;D

About 20 years ago, I built a XT500 engine into a KX250 chassis.

What surprised a lot of people is how difficult it was for YZ's, CR'sWR's etc to get away from this 27hp hybrid in the tight stuff, and even more so in the technical stuff.

It was only on long open sections that the lack of power of the XT engine showed a clear disadvantage.

So, depending on terrain, those CRF-L's may surprise it's critics big-time.

The most important is your suspension.

I could not agree more with Honda as a brand.

To make this even more impressive- this was the brainchild of Honda Tygerberg. A local dealership whom as many of you might know have invested heavily into the market over the last 3 years.

Not only with Adventure bikes but all the sectors.

More on them and the weekend warriors later.

Problem is that without top riders, any rider "slowness" will be attributed by the critics as a power deficiency of the engine.

As such, the CRF450L will not escape it's main "fault".

I'm not sure I agree entirely Danie, when it comes to Rally's I think reliability comes into play a lot more. You can be Toby Price but without a solid bike under you you're getting a DNF. First prize here will be to have all 3 finish the race regardless of position. The Tankwa eats bikes for breakfast, many of the fast 250's have died out there in previous years.
