About 20 years ago, I built a XT500 engine into a KX250 chassis.

I am building this Hybrid currently - XT engine & frame, WR450 front end, PE175 rear swingarm (extra length)....

I am following this thread with interest!!!

Awesomeness, I take my hat off to Honda for taking this approach, kudos to them  :thumleft: I love the fact that they have chosen 3 normal bike enthusiast to do this and they didn't go searching for riding gods to prove a massive point. These bikes are about the weekend warriors and as such you guys are the perfect target market  : :thumleft: Besides, Taye will be there to dish out a hiding at the sharp end of the field  ;D

I'm not sure I agree entirely Danie, when it comes to Rally's I think reliability comes into play a lot more. You can be Toby Price but without a solid bike under you you're getting a DNF. First prize here will be to have all 3 finish the race regardless of position. The Tankwa eats bikes for breakfast, many of the fast 250's have died out there in previous years.

I always like using the example of Sebastien Loeb and Stephane Peterhansel. Loeb is always at the front and winning stages when Dakar starts, but hardly ever finishes. Peterhansel has won more titles on bikes and cars combined than anyone else.

Peterhansel knows how to be patient and consistent. Add some experience and superb navigational skills and you have - Mr Dakar.

One thing we do not have to worry about is reliability of the bikes. The jockeys navigating the bikes is what this will be about.

The HP might be an issue for some, but I will put good money on it that you can give me a proper KTM Factory Race Bike with proper Navigation training and then give Toby Price a standard CRF 450L and he will still end the race a day ahead of me.

Indeed it would be a major achievement if all three bikes and all three riders can cross the finish line of the Tankwa Cross Country Rally.

On that note, let me introduce team Honda Tygerberg.

Johann Botha

Johann is the DP of Honda Tygerberg and part of the Mekor group.

I am pretty sure his main income is cars, but heís got an amazing passion for bikes.

Despite not being a rider himself he will probably admit that he loves bikes more than cars and invests much of his personal time into the bike part of the business.

Yes Honda makes great products (and if we read between the lines on Kobusís thread then it is about to get even better) but guys like Johann makes it even better.

Despite his busy schedule he goes with on every weekend away and will be at the Tankwa Rally as well.

Gerrit du Toit (Scrat)

I met Gerrit on Quest 2017 but did not spend too much time with him.

It was only afterwards that I got to know him on a personal level and I can confidently say that heís one of the most genuine guys I know and became one of my closest friends.

I have never seen him without a smile or without a positive attitude. If there is one guy I would want next to me in a difficult time or situation it is Gerrit.

I do not think there is one thing he cannot do.

For those who donít know - he is one of a select few who have completed all the Amagezaís. All 6 of them. You do not simply finish six extreme races without skill and the other attributes previously mentioned.

Claude Deyzel

I first met Claude through Gerrit.

As the saying goes - Youíre known by the company you keep.

I only really got to know Claude as a participant of Quest 2018. The Quest he would eventually win with his partner Mojaki.

After Quest we hooked up for a few beers and these days I spent more time with Claude than with my wife.

He is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He will never leave a friend behind. He will look for the good in every situation and will force you out of your comfort zone.

We hardly ever ride bikes together but we do plenty of dinners, indoor rock climbing and beer.

Claude is a Vet by trade and thus the perfect addition to the team - team doctor. Heaven forbids.

Like Gerrit heís competed in the Amageza and finished all 4 that he started.

A very accomplished rider and the only one of us who can really pop a wheelie

Me

Not as much to say so I will make up some cool shit.

I have been a member of this forum for many years.

I have ridden big Adventure bikes for the last 15 years.

I currently own and ride a SYM300 Citycom scooter.

I have never done any Amageza and only competed in one Western Cape Off Road enduro race.

This then brings the total number of Amageza finishes between the three of us to 10.

Despite us being 3 ordinary beer loving fellows, we do take this very seriously.

As a team we have to prepare as best we can, get to know the bikes as best we can, dress the part and have a proper diet.

More about the dress and diet part later.

First order of business was TITS (Time in the Saddle) and for this we took the bikes on an 800km weekend ride last weekend. The Tankwa Rally will be 1500km over three days and we did half of that in two. It is bound to test the endurance of both man and machine and I am happy that I still have some cycling shorts laying around.
