Who here also has a SCOOTER.
« on: September 04, 2019, 08:29:40 am »
Who here also has a commuter scooter?  Please share the make what you like about it, fuel consumption, comfort etc with us.

I first started with a Yamaha BWS but have sold it because it is just to small for me. Bought a SYM Jet 14 200 (They are actually only a 170 cc)
Here is what I think about it:

Price: I paid R23 500 for mine and think they are very good value for money.
Fuel Consumption: They have OLD school motors no EFI or anything fancy, gets about 28 to 30 Km/L.
Performance: Keeps very easy up or faster with the traffic here in PE. Runs 90/100 very easily
Reliability: 18 months old, done only about 1800 Km (Do about 7Km round trip with it per day) Only went in for 2 services. Nothing else went wrong, starts very easily cold or hot.
Mods: Top box & Handel-bar Raisers.
Would I recommend it, yes I would if you are going use it only in town. Would not take it on a highway.

I am thinking to upgrade mine for a 300cc scooter (Yamaha X-Max or Sym Citycom) and would like to have feedback from other owners on them.

A few years ago I bought a Jonway 250cc scooter

It was fantastic, I loved riding that thing.. then it overheated and so I took it in under warranty, then the problems rolled in. Eventually the dealership gave in and agreed i got a bad bike and gave me a new one..

30km later I was pushing it back to the dealership, got my money back and went to go but a real bike

I learnt the hard way, if you gonna get a scooter get a real one, BWS or T Max would get my vote but they so expensive

I like the look of the SYM scooters  :thumleft:

If I had a bigger bike I would also consider commuting with a scooter, but for me personally, my Dakar does work and play very well, so for now, only 1 bike in my garage.  :thumleft:

I also think the Yamaha scooters are the best but as you say flippen expensive.
I would like to buy a X-Max 300 but just can't get over it to pay R80K for a 300cc scooter. :( :(

Yip, I have a scooter. Actually 3 x scooters. Not for commuting though.

Vespa P200E
Vespa PX200E (e-start)
SYM Crox 125

@stcomza - if you are looking to buy let me know, mine is for sale. Less than 3000km on and in excellent condition.

Going to use the PX200E for some touring - got luggage for it and testing a few changes out over the weekend with a 2 day ride.

People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day. And doing nothing often leads to the very best kind of something.

These are very expensive for a 125 scooter in my opinion.....even with all the trickery.

True, but still way cheaper than a secondhand 150cc Vespa

I recently bought myself a SYM Citycom300 to commute. I commute 80km a day.

It was one of the best decisions made to date.

The SYM comes with a 2 year unlimited warranty, is cheap (R30k less than the Yamaha), is backed by Kawasaki SA, gets 30+ km p/l, runs at 130km/h with ease and is comfortable.

I cannot see why one would take a big bike or bigger bike and waste it on a commute. This makes so much more sense.

These days I basically ride it everyday, everywhere. Unless there is a crises and I have to take the car.

Should clock 2000km today in less than 2 months.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies

Many years ago I was on a tour with a coulple of Americans in it. They were all given K100RS' to ride and were very disgusted to having to ride scooters. Only a Harley qualified as a motorsiekel.  :lol8:
